Buying a computer... backwards

Don't get me wrong, I've pretty much got a list of what I want my complete computer to be, but I think I'll buy the peripherals first, and then order the main components.

Why you ask? I really don't know.


Anyway, this is whats sitting in the cart at Newegg, and I'd thought I'd ask if anyone's had any problems with the parts. Oh yeah, I'll use my computer mainly for gaming. And when I say "mainly", I mean "only."

Oh yeah, I already got my monitor from Dell, the 1907FP 19" LCD monitor. I guess Dell is having some kind of promotion, found out about it in the Hot Deals forum,

I have the exact mouse and keyboard and I'm very pleased. Good choise on the burner, maybe you should try a 4550 - the price is almost the same.

A 4550? I'm not seeing it at newegg, is there a link?


And what would you suggest Luckyboy1? I thought that power strip was robust, hah.

You might consider a UPS Backup w/ surge protection up to $75,000.00.
Cyberpower 550VA

You can get higher wattage VARs from Costco or Walmart. Protect all your perepheals too.

Ahh, thanks FX.

So the only difference between the 4570 and the DVD I had listed is that the 4570 has 5x DVD RAM?

What does that do for me?

pkme2: I don't know if I want to spend that much money on a UPS... I just want a damn nice power strip with surge portection. Is there such a thing? Or do I have to get a UPS in order to be protected against surges?

We had a whole series of brownouts and power outages here on Maui, last month. Costco & Walmart sold out their e-Machines and HP stock. All available VAR UPS's were sold out too.

The sudden spike when power is restored can damaged any system, and our local power company said they are only responsible up to their meter, and whatever happens in one's home is not their responsibility. Very expensive lesson.

Everybody had power surge protection on their computers here too, but something surely happened. My clients were buying their new computers via Dell, eMachine & HP. for 2 weeks. Those who had the Cyberpower VAR; my students and clients didn't have any problems.
that's a fact. I can only suggest, you make the decision. If it's a inexpensive system, why bother? But you be the judge.

Looney, thanks, but no thanks. I like my keyboards flat, it's easier to play games t hat way. :)
