Buying a cellphone from Amazon and porting your old number. Anyone done it?

I am looking at some sweet deals on Amazon and since our contract with Verizon expires in couple of weeks (can't wait to dump them), I am considering buying online. My question is, how does porting your number works if buying from Amazon? Would I have to go to Cingular store locally to get it ported?

 

Amazon has an FAQ about this, but I am not sure where it is.

Amazon doesn't do number porting to Cingular.

Vzw phones are sucky in general, and they like to disable features so you can use their pay services

Cingular and Amazon.com have not yet established a method for customers to transfer their current number to a new Cingular account. Unfortunately, in order to port your previous number, Cingular will cancel the account that Amazon.com activated and will activate a new account with the ported number. This process makes you ineligible for the Amazon.com rebates. We hope to offer a porting option in the coming months, so please check back.

DON'T try to port your # until your contract ends. Once you port the #, you are effectively cancelling your service (since there's no # associated with it anymore). Your current company (Verizon in your case) will look at this as early cancellation of your account, and will charge you the associated fee (usually $150 - $200). You have to wait until the day your contract expires to do it without looking at any penalties.

The quality of service here (Louisville, KY) is spotty at best. I do get a fair number of dropped calls, and the reception at my house is even worse.

I did find the info about Amazon not being able to port the numbers over from Cingular which means I'll just have to use the local store

Slick5150 - don't worry, I will definitely wait until my contract expires on the 7th, I am well aware of the cancellation fee.
