Buying A Car

So, I'm considering purchasing a car. I'm currently in Michigan and the car I'd be purchasing is in New Jersey. The plan is for me to fly out next saturday and drive it back. How ever I do have a question...

Now, when I do it, I will not have a license plate, however I will have the Title and Proof of insurance, but no registration or license plate as I'll be paying for the car once I get there.

Should I worry about not having a license plate? I know in michigan you can drive without a license plate assuming you are driving straight to the Secretary of State.

Or, should I ask him if I can borrow his current license plate and just ship it back to him once I get here?

I would contact your county auditor and ask them?

I'm not sure that will help... I'll be driving through a number of states to get back, it seems that most government employees only know info about the government they are employed by. (IE Michigan)

I had the same problem when I bought my car in MD and had to drive it down. Had to spend some money and get a temp. license plate n stuff ... sucked

Also get a bill of sale from the seller. If you have any trouble, that coudl help show the officer that you DID in fact just buy the car. It's a good thing to have anyway I guess.

Thanks Guys. I wasn't aware of temp plates other then the ones that dealers will provide that last 7 or so days. I just checked the DMV website and I can get a 30 day plate for $25... Now I just have to hope that I can get one for a car that I won't own until I pick it up.

i would assume that if you're buying a car from several states away, the car must be of tremendous value and extremely rare, so i would also assume you could afford to simply have it shipped to your door.

otherwise, you can find another corolla two blocks away that might cost $100 more but wouldn't require all this trouble.

bah. Just take a plate off your current car or one of your parant's/friend's and bring it with you. Chances of getting pulled over are pretty slim and if you do you can probably get away with just a warning anyway. Thats what I always do.
