Buying a car

Lifer
My license is suspended I get it back in 2 weeks...I need to buy a new car, found exactly what I want, but its such a good deal I'm afraid it won't be there in 2 weeks....do you need a valid license to buy a car?

No you don't need a valid license; dealers don't run background checks on your license, they only care if you physically have one or not.

So as long as you didn't turn it in when it got suspended, you'll be ok.

You don't even need a license to buy the car. You can buy it and have someone else drive it home for you. You only need a license if you're test driving it.

If your license is suspended do you have insurance? No insurance and the car does not leave the lot here in NY state, well i believe.

Well I don't know if the insurance company knows I don't have a license or not. After the incident, before the suspension kicked in, I was still in good standing with them.

Bring your suspended license when you purchase the car.

However have another licensed driver with insurance drive it home.

well i guess technically the insurance issue has nothign to do with it since you could buy the car and then get insurance on it later but again it could not leave the car lot, maybe you could buy it and then have them store it for you?

I remember having to show them my license when I bought my car in MD, but I doubt they ran a background check on it or anything. Like ZV said though, I wouldn't try test-driving it with a suspended license.

Again, you do _not_ need a license to get the car titled in your name. My cousin had two pickups registered in his name before he was 15 (farm family, they found a deal on a work truck for him and a daily truck for him). All you need is the insurance. If you can prove you have insurance you're fine, just have a friend or relative drive it off the lot for you.

That won't work with most new/newish car purchases. You have to have insurance coverage on the car itself, not just the person driving it off the lot. You might be able to get it insured under someone else's name, such as a parent or a relative.

Oh and I don't physically have the license, I had to turn it in.

You may have to provide some type of photo ID when you finally sign for the car if there is some type of financing involved. Do you have a passport?

If you're paying cash, you will probably be able to buy the car. If you're financing, probably not.

If his current policy is still active, and if he's with a decent insurance company, any new vehicle purchase is automatically covered for a certain period (State Farm is 30 days). And yes, that's insurance on the car and not on the driver.

Furthermore, there's no reason he can't get insurance on a car even while his license is suspended. He can insure it, he just can't drive it.

I just purchased a new vehicle at the dealer last week. He had a copy of the terrorist act on his desk that included a section on vehicle purchase requiring I.D. so that vehicles could be traced. It did not say license, just I.D. with a subsection on what was considered acceptable I.D.

Buy car, drive home carefully, garage it, then tell insurance about it when your license is back and don't ever tell them it was suspended. They don't ask, you don't tell!

You can't buy a car without proof of insurance, unless you pay cash.

Or finance it any other way than through the dealer.
