Buying a Car Through an Auto Auction

What are the pros and cons? What should I look out for and what's your opinion on buying a car in one of those auto auctions?

I saw some pretty good starting bid but could it be too good to be true?

Membership is $50 for a year and I'd have to bring in $500 every time I bid; if I retract my bid, they keep the $500. Otherwise, that $500 goes toward paying for the car. Fair policy?

Most of the time, the cars are there for a reason - ie. they have problems. Atleast thats how it was at the one i went to a few times. The jerk off thing todo would be to bid and retract it, so that policy is more than fair.
