Buying a car frustrations

So me and my S.O. went out to the nearest dealership to take a look around. After about 5 minutes we had been stalked and pinned down. We tell the guy what we want and he starts showing us stuff that doesn't really meet out criteria, but whatever. We see a car we have been looking at for a while. He says he would like us to step inside and run some numbers. We've looked at a few of these and have an idea what we wanna pay, so how about instead of running our credit you give us a price. He shakes my hand and tells me to have a nice day and that this sale is for some people and not for others.
What the hell is that, i ask for a price and that makes the sale not for me? This sale isn't for people with half a brain? I feel like there should be something we can do, like write the BBB or something. Seems beyond shady to me.

Cliff notes:
Basically got kicked off a car lot for asking for a price quote.

i feel like going there and test driving some new sports car with a 5-speed and just grinding my way through all the gears til the tranny drops out.

find the car you want online, email car dealerships for price quote. haggle via email. blah blah blah blah...last step is to go to dealership and test drive/pick up car.

without having a real idea of what we want, test driving random cars is our first step.

haha, you were one of the "others". if you don't agree to let them check your credit they think you're just wasting their time.

I used to do the same thing after asking a few questions of potential buyers. If you didn't seem like a solid buyer credit report comes first. While other dumbass salesmen were test driving people in new Maximas that couldn't buy used sentras I was selling cars.

i was already pre-approved by my credit union for the amount i wanna spend, so running a waste of my time and as far as i know, detrimental to my credit.

That's bs. I would never let someone run my credit before talking numbers.

Go back and talk to the owner (name on big sign outside). Tell story ... employee fired.

Friend told me that is not neccessarily the way to go these days. Cheaper to negotitate I guess granted I wish all stores went to fixed prices. I hate negotiating for things that depreicate in value.

The price wasn't on the Monroney or buyer's guide?

Also I never talked numbers until I knew funds were available, credit was ok, trades, other parties involved were there etc......

from what i could gather, he was brought in for the sale. So i don't even know that he could be fired by the owner. And i would imagine that this endorsed by the owner, easier to swindle people.

They didn't post prices anywhere, and since we test driving random cars, it's not like i looked them all up on time before hand.

How old are you?

Just go test drive and find out what car you want but don't deal w/ them right away. With most cars out there now, there are dedicated message boards/forums where you can get a good idea what the best price you should shoot for. Go from there.

With that said, I bought my VW GTI at invoice last year and then got the 350Z at below invoice (although I am qualified for the VPP, I know that 500 above invoice is the going best price).

Yeah, i know, we are young and i doubt he took us serious and that's why i am here posting and test driving some other car. But i was car shopping for like 3 months before i bought my car and have never been treated with such disrespect.

Also, I bought my Z a few weeks ago w/ financing from my credit union. The dealership was really nice (and the salesperson was a hottie), was extremely helpful and did not once try to run my credit. Find yourself a dealer that wants to earn your business

I agree, as long as you don't look 17, you should be treated with respect at a car dealership. I'm 24 and looks pretty young, but car dealerships around here know enough to understimate yuppies 🙂

I edited the post to include that I didn't talk numbers until I knew funds were available, credit was good, all decision making parties were present, trades involved, etc.......

I also didn't let people just drive random cars around but don't worry there are plenty of salesmen that will.
