Buying a 2007 (new) when 2009s are coming out

Hi,

I found a 2007 Audi A3 with only 200 miles. The salesman said it's technically a used car, with the warranty time running since November (so about 38 months) left. I'm trying to determine the depreciation for this car, esp. because when I'm selling it buyers will see it as a 2007 not 2009, regardless of its condition/mileage. Edmunds shows $23,021 for private party & $24,723 for dealer retail. Should I ask them for a quote or make an offer? Would 25k be a good buy (that's 4k for 2 years), paying a premium for being actually a new car? The 2009s are not in yet, only 2008s.

Thanks!

2000 to 2500 per year is a good rule of thumb, so I think you are in the ballpark. Remember, since the warranty has been running, no matter what the dealer says, it's still a used car.

I would try and seriously low-ball them. The warranty on the car starts when it is first bought/titled. If it's already started you're going to be listed as the second owner of the car, not the first and you'd be buying a used car, not a new one.

By 25k being $4,000 off, do you mean that the MSRP of the car is $29K? If so, I think you can do a lot better than that. What's their current asking price?

The MSRP is about $30650, the invoice maybe around 28700, I couldn't find 2007 prices. So 25k would be 5.5k below MSRP.

I'll search for an alternative, maybe in Nashville or Atlanta to generate competition.
/Edit: The dealer websites are useless, not a single A3.

Don't worry about the MSRP, concentrate on how much below invoice you can get it. I'd say price it like a low mileage used car....that's exactly what it is.
