Buying 17inch LCD, which one Philips 170b2t, Viewsonic va720, or Mircotek 783

Looking at all three, only the Philips has DVI, but i hear the other two have lower response times, the Philips is 40ms typical, is DVI that important or should I buy the Viewsonic which is my personal choice, thanks for any and all insight.

I have the Viewsonic VA720 and I am moderately satisfied with it's performance. I am not a gamer (Links 2003 only) so I could not tell about the popular shooter games. The screen for the Viewsonic is very bright, I have to turn down the brightness and contrast. Looking at the LCD is a little uncomfortable for my eyes. I bought the Viewsonic $549us after a 100 dollar mail-in rebate.

Thanks for the suggestion on the Hitachi but I need to make one of those three choices, does anyone know the refresh rate on the viewsonic, microtek, Philips said theirs is >40ms typical but i suppose that could mean less but probably not, it does have DVI though and the other two don't, is DVI worth it or should i just grab the microtek, i read on here a few other people were really happy with it with the games ive been playing ie quake3, battlefield 1942 etc... Thanks for any advice...

If these 3 are the only choices, I'd pick Viewsonic VA720.

Philips B2 series 17" is old stuff, thick bezel, high response time. It's not worth to buy.
Microtek is cheap brand low quality stuff, although the price is good, it's not worth to buy since there are many other better quality LCD cost not much more.
Viewsonic VA series is for national local retail stores only, I can guess you're going to buy in a local retail store, although I don't like Viewsonic, I can only pick this one for you.

Those are some poor choices to start with TDavis. I'd look at either of the 16ms models from Hitachi and Planer, as was mentioned. But my sure choice would have to be the 172t from Samsung. I've never used it, but check www.neoseeker.com for many reviews, and Anandtech will soon be publishing a positive reivew of it as well (a moderator told me in another thread). I think it looks real nice too.

Not sure about the Planer, but the Hitachi is rated at 16ms, not 14ms

And what about the 19inch Microtek which has a response time of 25ms and a contrast ratio of 500:1, I would assume that this would be a nice monitor?

not sure, but the Samsung 191t and fp1900 from Dell seem to be good and popular 19" lcds (they're pretty much the exact same thing)

search Anandtech forums to find out more

Right now, you can get the 191t for $790 (search Pricewatch.com)
The Dell version has a highly fluctuating price, right now, its $680 from the Small Business section of Dell.com (not sure if you have to be a business or not though)

The Samsung version can rotate into "portrait" mode

Hope this is a helpful suggestion
