$!#@% buyer's remorse...

i just completed my newest computer build, and as with any purchase i've made, i'm experiencing buyer's remorse. basically, i built this system to be my computer for college (i plan on gaming), and i'm wondering if i've done the best i could, or if i've screwed myself over in terms of upgradability. what i'm asking for is your opinions, since i just finished it and i guess technically i could return something if i decided i really don't want/need it (less the restocking fee). so, here's my system:

msi k8n neo platinum
athlon 64 3000+ (512kb cache)
maxtor 120gb hd (pata)
radeon 9800 pro
liteon cdrw/dvd-rom
samsung 955df

the rest of the stuff is from my old computer, and i'm not too concerned about it. my main concern is with the hard drive. to me, the maxtor seems a bit loud, and im wondering if i should have gone with SATA for simplicity? it would have made the cables in my case a lot neater.

your thoughts?

p.s. i suppose i'll never be satisfied though...

Harddrives aren't that expensive. If you're not happy with it, buy a new one in a few months.

One tip for preventing buyers remorse, after you buy your stuff.... DO NOT check out the Hot Deals forum.

I think that's a good setup. There isn't a real big performance difference with sata anyway, and if you want neater cabling you can get rounded ide cables. And yes HD's are very cheap now, and 120gb is a lot of space if your really think about it, so you could always add on more later, or replace your drive for 50-70 bucks AR.

what do you guys think about the rest of the system?

oh, i certainly wont.

As far as upgradeability, isn't everything going to socket 939? Is 754 going to keep on being used? I haven't paid near enough attention to the athlon64 goings on, I just bought a barton 3000 about 4 months ago so I won't be upgrading for a while 😱

If your college experience is going to be anything like mine, you'll probably end up getting a secondary hard drive. Buy a nice one then, and move your current to file storage.

Yeah, we do a lot of, umm, writing? in college.

I really wouldn't worry about it. You can only put so much money into a computer, and once you really get into the college student lifestyle you'll find much better things to spend your money on (alcohol, women, liquor, beer...).
