Well if the prices are true and the 4850 is only $179 and is faster than a 9800GTX and it uses half the power and half the heat of the 9800GTX I'm sold on the 4850 :) From what I hear the Nvidia cards are going to be way way too much money, something like $450 for the 260 and $600 for the 280 no thanks :-(

It's the 4870 that's speculated to be on par with the 9800 GTX.

The 4870 is speculated to be a good 30% faster than the 9800GTX. The 4870 is supposed to be ~30% faster than the 4850, so it would be likely that the 4850 is equal to or perhaps faster than the 9800GTX.

I hope they're good performers, but 9800GTX performance at a $179 price point? Seems ATI would be selling themselves short if that were the case. I reallyreally have to see benchmarks on this one. I'll stay tuned in official thread...

Thats the rumored GDDR5 version i believe. Initial 4870s and 4850s are using GDDR3s and only packs 512mb of it too.

Im considering the HD4850 btw. I was originally planning to get one of those galaxy 8800GTs that allows to raise its vGPU up to 1.3 (With my goal of reaching 700~750/2100~2200 core/mem) but seeing as the new HD48x0 series at stock might perform just as fast as a massively OCed G92, made me think twice. Ill probably decide after the initial wave of benches though.

edit -HD4850 @ ~$229, HD4870 GDDR5 @ ~$329, HD 4870 GDDR3 @???
