Buy Windows 8.1 now or wait for Windows 10?

I'm running Windows 7 Pro and love it. But heard good things about Windows 8.1 and i'm tempted to upgrade to it...but not sure about this move since Windows 10 is releasing late 2015 and I can wait.

Is Windows 8.1 really worth it mainly for games? Will I see an important difference that will make me wet my pants?

Amazon.ca have it for 175CAD and free shipping...

If you are happy with your Windows 7 install I would just stick with it for now. I didn't notice any major differences in gaming, either positive or negative. I'm happy with Win 8.1, but if I hadn't got it for the pre-order price ($40 or something like that) I probably would have stayed with Windows 7.

For gaming - little to no difference.

I would look at the added features and see if there is anything you want to have. If not, either wait for the next OS that has something you really want, or for the support for 7 to end, whichever comes first.

I like Win8.1 a lot more than I do Win7. However, 175CAD is not cheap and with 10 release being less than a year away, I would suggest saving your money and waiting for 10 release.

Most likely, MS will do another promo for Win 10, like they did for 8, for way under $50.

Do you have to do something special to use this promo? Like be a member of something or is anyone eligible for that promo?

I am in the same boat. The rumor is that upgrades from 8 -> 10 will be free or cheap. However, it still makes it hard for me to justify dropping $150+ for an 8.1 pro license. I doubt you will see enough of a difference going to 8 to justify dropping the cash this close to the release of a new OS.

Until there is an official announcement, I am just sticking with 7. You can always use the technical preview, or do an 8 trial until then if you need to.

Since it is just speculation at this point nobody can say. If MS runs the same promo as with Windows 8, then you only needed to be running a qualifying operating system to make the upgrade. I want to say it was for Vista/Win7 users but I can't say for sure. It was a good deal for sure, even better considering it also came with a free Media Center key as well.

I would say no, it's not worth it.

And I say this as someone who just got 8.1 and quite enjoys it. But I just built a new system. Unless you're building one now as well, I think it would be a waste with 10 right around the corner.
$175 CDN also seems far too high.

I would just wait the year or so and put that $175 towards an upgrade or other expenditure you will really notice and use.
