So I'm thinking about selling my current cameras and buying the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and a used Canon EOS 5D. Now with a approximate budget of $5,000 to $6,000 for the first body, would you wait (up to a year) for Canon's next iteration of camera releases?

Also does anyone know of a camera retailer that has military discounts?

Thanks guys!

Can't you purchase Canon DSLRs through AAFES?

And no, I wouldn't buy a 1D4. I think APS-H is a dead sensor format. Get a 7D if you're concerned about pixel-density, get a 5D2 if you want big-sensor image quality, or wait for a 5D3 if you think Canon will finally get their act together and make the perfect camera.

I don't think I'd go with a 1D4 right now. You can save a lot of $$$ and give up only a little in features by going with a used 1D3, or a 7D. Especially considering that your lens lineup could use a little padding. You could get a 1D3, 70-200/2.8 IS, 16-35/2.8, and 35L for around $6K.

Sports
Cars races
Some head shots (I think I'll prefer the 5D for this)
product shoots
boat races

those are just somethings

Thanks everyone for your input

heh, canon's perfect camera most certainly won't be in the form of a 5D3. I hope to be dead wrong so I can have an excuse to buy it.... but i won't hold my breath.

The "perfect camera" will always be pending. Right now, I am wanting to replace my 5D with a 5D MK II. Looking at all options.

I'm selling my 5D :p

I'd go with the 1D3 and bank the rest on fast lenses for your action photography mate.

I was thinking the other day, currently I have a steady income* for my camera gear budget. I also specifically started a savings account for this camera 9 months ago. I'v never bought a new camera and I really want to. So against everyone's opinion I might still go ahead and the 1D Mark IV and then save up for a new lens.

Thanks guys, now what lens should i be looking to make my "target" lens? I prefer Canon

*Any money I make from photography goes in to camera gear.

What do you need? Looking at your lenses, I would say you need a better 50 (Sigmalux) or an 85mm lens. But that's just me. Or maybe an UWA like the 17-40? or 16-35?

BTW I would recommend you to get a 7D + 5D combo instead. 5D2 if you can afford it but 5Dc is perfectly acceptable.

So are you saying he should get a powershot A200 or an Ixus 500 instead of a 1d Mk. 4? LOL

I think you should go with a 1D3 instead of a 1D IV. Less money spent on gear=more money for you to keep ;) Besides, the 1D IV doesn't seem like a killer camera when you compare it to the D3s, mostly due to the smaller APS-H sensor.

As far as lenses go, if you want a true UWA with a 1D (not 1Ds), then you will need to go for the Sigma 12-24mm. A 17-40 or 16-35 will be wide, but it won't really be "ultra" wide. Also, if how often do you need the 200mm+ range? If not, I would suggest considering the excellent 70-200mm f/2.8 IS Mk. II and pairing that with a 2x TC.

As far as other lenses go, an 85mm f/1.8 or 100mm f/2 are inexpensive investments that are excellent for portraiture.
