Buy Sprint phone now or wait?

I'm in the market for a Sprint Android phone (adding a line to parents' family plan) and I'm wondering if I should snag one now or wait awhile. I know Sprint will start moving over to LTE late this year, but I don't really want to wait that long. My main concern right now is being able to upgrade to ICS in the future. Has anything been said about these phones getting it and what do you think I should go with given the price points (from Amazon)?

HTC Evo 4G - $10
Motorola Photon - $50
Samsung Galaxy SII - $80

Evo 4G is like the first android superphone to come out. Not even sure why it is being considerd since it is so old. SGS2 for sure or wait for something else.

I don't think Sprint ever announces phones at CES either. They usually do it at some other show I forgot the name of with a launch in the summer (June)? Maybe CTIA?

Well sprint is switching over to lte - so if you can wait 6 or 8 months it might be worth it - if you can't I'd go with the photon if you want reliable good sounding phone; else the epic touch (i personally prefer the touch but it has a few issues with firmware (search LOS) - some folks indicate the fix didn't fix it).
-
I personally decided to jump to verizon (during their double rate promo) - but i'm, not oppose to returning to sprint if they can get their act together.
-
With regards to ces - not too sure what to expect - i would be very surprise if sprint introduce antoher major wimax phone given their move to lte.

Sprint does announce models at CES, they did last year

Conversely, score a used EVO and keep your upgrade in reserve for a few months...

The EVO is still a damn good phone.

the evo has pretty poor battery life. I'd pay the extra for the sgs2. you'll get it back when you resell it much more than $80 difference there

They announced the Evo Shift at CES 2011... not exactly a top android phone.
They announce their high-end devices at CTIA in May or so (Evo 4G, Evo 3D).

This...

SGSII blows away the Evo in every way possible. No reason at all to go with a Evo at this point. Especially since I doubt the Evo will get ICS officially where as the SGSII will for sure.

This. The SGS2 is an excellent phone, and the Sprint version uses Exynos unlike the TMO/ATT versions. Its also the only phone on your list that's guaranteed to get an ICS update.

I believe the AT&T SGSII does have the Exynos. However, the SGSII Skyrocket does not.

If you play the waiting game you will be waiting forever as new shit comes out or is announced every month. Just buy the best now and dont regret it.

I'd say just get the SGS2. It's still a damn good phone. It has the Exynos chip, SAMOLED+ screen, and excellent battery life (which I find shocking, because most wimax phones have abysmal battery life). Photon isn't bad either. Don't even think about getting stuck with the Evo 4G for 2 years, though.

If the last 3 years are anything to go by, I don't expect a new Sprint flagship phone until late Spring/early Summer. They'll announce it at CTIA in May and launch in June. Just get the SGS2 and be happy with it.

Buy an SGS2. By the time LTE is prime time on Sprint, you'll close to a new phone anyway.

This. Sprint typically doesn't have a big presence at CES as they prefer CTIA. Even when it's announced the phones won't be released for months. The build out of LTE will take quite a while. I agree that by the time it's really wifespread your going to be due for a new phone anyways.

I heard that the samsung Exynos chipset doesn't have a very good GPU.

Also is the best Android phone (or maybe any phone) at decoding h264 videos.

Probably stock; but the galaxy nexus does extremely well at open gl; it does less well at other operations (though it generally faster than most available).

Generally speaking samsung phones are fast (esp gpu) and have nice display; where they tend to lack is reception and (in some models) audio quality. For example the photon has better audio quality (and reception) than the epic touch. However, the epic touch is faster (but not necessary faster at downloading data).
-
Generally speaking most of these phones are trade offs; some have better displays other receptions; other battery life. No one seems to want to make the 'perfect' phone (though the galaxy note is pretty darn close - cept for most it is too large - dang just can't win).

are those tested with stock rom or custom rom?
