Topeka — There's not much privacy in the animal world. When you gotta go, you gotta go. That's why the elephants at the Topeka Zoo don't mind much that zoo keepers are collecting their poo.
You may want to hold your breath for this story. Topeka Zoo officials wants to make a profit out of poo. 49 News Reporter Lauren Seabrook tells us how this stinky fundraiser will put elephant waste into the homes of many Topekans.
Hallmark joined forces with the Topeka Zoo to make Holiday cards recognizing Hope the Giraffe.
Zoo Keeper Kim Doman says, "But they have looked at us a little funny when we've been up there picking up and scavenging. They're not really sure what we're up to."
Little do they know they're deposit is about to turn a profit. Zoo volunteers are decorating the elephant waste and plan to sell it. Volunteer Karen Taylor says, "After it's dried. Because when it's fresh, it has a terrible odor as you can imagine."
Doman spends most of her time with the girls, and she knows them quite well. So well, she knows who's poo is best for the job. Doman says, "Her's come out a lot more compact with a bit of a glaze on them. So, they don't fall apart and they dry really well. They're all in different types of shapes, from Hershey kisses to frisbees."
When you're out looking for Christmas gifts this year, it may not be number one on your list but the Topeka Zoo says it should be number two. Taylor says, "You look at them and you can't help but smile or laugh."
Doman says My Pet Poo is mostly made of hay and won't stink up your home. So, buy as many as you want, they won't run out. The girls are busy making fresh piles daily.
The Topeka Zoo will be selling My Pet Poo at its Arts and Crafts fair this Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices start at 10 dollars.
Also on sale at the arts and crafts show is a special set of greeting cards. Hallmark joined forces with the Topeka Zoo to make Holiday cards recognizing Hope the Giraffe. The inside reads "Hope you have a happy holiday season." Hope the Giraffe made national news when she beat a rare hoof disease.
