Buy one Toyota, Get one FREE. Legitimate? Fine Print?

Toyota of Dallas is advertising a massive "Buy one, get one free!" deal. It just so happens that my sister and my dad are both looking for new cars. My mom spotted the commercial.

Now, I told them that if a car salesman's mouth is open, he is telling a lie, and that I thought the fine print probably said something like, "Free for 12 months," aka no payments for 12 months, or "No down payment required," aka drive off the lot without paying a cent.

Anyone know what this deal actually is?

I'd rather not drive to the dealership and bring the buy-one-get-one deal up and look like an idiot. I am sure the sales team laughs at all the people they con. I know there are several ATOTers that are/have been car salesmen/women.

I hate talking to dealerships. The only guys I don't mind talking to are the mechanics. Sure they charge up the ass, but the work is normally top notch.

Then you will never find out. Are we supposed to magically see the fine print in front of us? Call them and ask what the deal is, hang up if you don't like were they are going. FFS people these days need to learn confrontation and how not to be lead on.

Chevy has done this in the last couple of years. Some dealerships did a thing where if you bought a Suburban, or other similarly large profit vehicle, you got a free Aveo.

The Kia dealership did this here too a couple years ago. The "Free" car ended up being a free 12 month lease. That's probably what it is in this case, you buy a high-profit car and get a one year lease on a base model Corolla or something.

Edit: Chances are, whatever the "free" car ends up being, you'll probably end up paying whatever they want for the car to get the "free" one (even if it's above MSRP). You'll have to factor in the free car to figure out if the deal is worth it or not.

Right, but is it legitimate?

Link to ad?? Call the dealership while they are still open, how else are we supposed to know. it might be what you suggested, it might be a free used one with a jacked up price on the new one. Call them.

How the hell is anyone here supposed to know what the fine print is on some car deal in Dallas? Call the dealership, talk to the salespeople. Ask them to see the terms of the deal. They don't force a gun to your head and make you buy a car, you can always walk away if it is anything but a buy one get one free deal.

Yeah, Hyundai or Kia did it around here a while back... buy an SUV or minivan or something like that and get a sub-$10k car for free.

Mitsubishi did it around here too, but the free Mitsubishi was a Mitsubishi TV (which the ad was clear about).

Does Toyota make any ATVs or lawn equipment anything like that link Honda does? That could be what the free Toyota is. ;)

Correct. You'll likely have to buy a loaded '06 Sequoia or something at full MSRP, and then you get a "free" base Yaris with no options. Also, any factory rebates will go straight to the dealer. You might end up paying slightly less than you would if you bought the cars separately, but not by much.

I was just wondering what experience ATOTers had with these kind of deals before I called the dealership to ask. I wouldn't have thought about a free lease.

There is no ad that I could find online, so I can't link you guys.

I'll post after I get off the phone with them.

I think you're better off getting a Dodge/Chrysler with the free 42" panasonic plasma that I saw advertised in the paper when I was there last weekend.

I really doubt it. AFAIK even the Yaris is selling too well to need to give it away.

Maybe they're going to require you to buy it for $5k more than invoice and then give you some junk car from a lot of trade ins they couldn't get rid of?

Even if you don't want the "free" car, it gives you some bargaining position. Work out your deal first, then ask how much more of a discount you'll get if you skip the free car. If they give you full credit for the car, good for you. If not, decide if you could make a buck if you take the free car, then turn around and sell it (don't forget all the taxes and registration fees).

i dunno, toyota isn't hurting for sales, your bargaining position isn't great regardless.

sounds like a free 1 yr lease
