buy now or wait suggestions??

Hi all I am building a new system. I was looking at building P4 system with Asus P4PE , 2.4GB CPU, ti4200 etc. The price on these parts in Australia have come down a fair bit.

I mainly will be using the system for normal office home use and a bit of gaming. I am not overclocking and stability is important.

However I am in a dilemma with the springdale canterwood coming out. Do you think the price on these will be a lot more or will they be on par and is it worth waiting for them in my case???

The new 800 p4 cpus could be priced about the same as the 3.06 when it first came out ($650 U.S.). The mobos will probably be close to granite bay in price ($200-250). Performance wise, I'd expect only a 3-5% gain. I just ordered a refurb 655 sis gigabyte board, even though it may not run the new cpus. Personally, I don't beleive they will overclock quite as well as the 400 or 533 fsb cpus.

WAIT OUT THE WEEKEND!!! New CPU's and motherboard chipsets are being release Monday. The new motherboard/CPU will give you a really decent performance increase from initial leaked results (as in 8-15% minimal gains, and this is not verified to be using DDR400 RAM!). You will also have some headroom to upgrade your CPU later on, as they will no longer be using the 533 fsb, which means if you want to upgrade your CPU, you will need a new motherboard to go with it, but if you have a new canterwood chipset motherboard, you should be able to upgrade the CPU for the next few generations until Intel starts using a new pinless chip sometime next year.

o1die: It is a MUCH higher gain then 3-5%. The FSB is one of the MAIN bottlenecks on many systems. And a ~50% boost in FSB speed will give a major boost in overall system performance. This is one of the reasons overclocked systems which have the same hardware (all but same CPU that is) and one with a slower speed CPU is overclocked with the FSB to the same speed of the other CPU, the overclocked system will have better performance because it has a much higher bandwidth throughout the system due to the bus speed being faster.

I'm in Oz too and i'm waiting for Springdale. Springdale(i865) will most likely be around the current i845PE prices but Canterwood will definitely be more expensive and you'll be paying a premium on them. The new p4 C parts I dont' think will be that much more expensive for the lower clocked versions eg 2.4C and 2.8C etc.

I'd say they'd be around the compartive prices for the B parts.
