isn't the D90 a better body than D5100?

Yup, definitely a sidegrade.

OP, the 18-200 is a great, versatile lens (I use it on my d300), but don't jump on this deal just to get it. Heck, just buy the lens at full price and use it on your D90.

I bought a Tamron 18-200 (in Pentax mount) for a round the world trip. Unfortunately, that lens had some seriously soft corners at 18mm f3.5, which was where I took a goodly fraction of my pictures (I know more about photography now). This lens doesn't seem to have crazy soft corners, but the Nikon has 4.1% barrel distortion at 18mm, which is a lot. You can rectify that post-processing, but that will reduce your overall sharpness.

All in all, superzooms tend to require a lot of light for good image quality, as you'll probably want to stop them down to ~f8. And of course, they're generally best in the middle of their zoom range. And probably won't win any bokeh contest. But they're sure versatile when it comes to range. I was happy to have mine, though I don't use it a lot now.

Ken Rockwell sure likes his, though:

d90 is a couple years old, but still has some value... 5100 is smaller and lighter and takes as good a picture with me behind it... want to trade out whilst d90 is still relevant...

if you end up getting rid of your D90 at a reasonable price i might be intersted, i need another body to convert to IR

the d5100 is sure not the d90, but for the package price - what i sold the d90 for it's a nice change...

Nikon's 18-200mm is probably the best one there is

i've never used any other, but the 18-200 nikon (with 2 days use) is phenomenal... i'm annoyed i didn't buy it sooner... the d5100, a 35mm 1.8, the 18-200, and a sb600 flash is the wannabe shooter kit for the win...

You guys are ON CRACK! The d90 is NOT a better camera than the d5100. The 5100 is, in terms of image quality, technically identical to the D7000, which beats the D90 across the board, and DESTROYS all other crop-sensor SLRs in the market at high ISO.

Sure, the ergonomics blow compared to the D90, but it's better at taking pictures... There's a whole lotta uninformed 'feature sheet' opinion going on in here. I've spent time with all 3.... I'd take the 5100 over the d90 every day of the week. (for the record, I bought the 7000)

Way to necro a 3-month old thread about a then-existing deal...
