2KGames informs us that the much-maligned SecuROM copy protection has been removed from BioShock. From the official 2Kgames.com forums:

?Good news! As promised, all activation restrictions, including install limits, have been removed from BioShock PC as of today. You don?t have to patch or install anything for this to go into effect for your copy of BioShock ? it?s already done!

Enjoy your time in Rapture, and thank you for supporting BioShock and the 2K teams.?

This move by 2K doesn?t make everything right (those launch-day headaches were still a pain in the butt), but it does at least let us know that we can trust them to do the right thing in the long run and make sure that when we want to revisit Rapture in five years, we won?t be stopped at the airlock by a SecuROM security guard. Are you paying attention, EA? We expect the same treatment for Mass Effect a few months down the line.

I wish they would stop fixing the same mistakes over and over and just stop making them instead. But good news none the less.

Nice. Guess it's time to install the game. I wasn't waiting on anything in particular, but this is as good a reason as any to start the game.

Check Best Buy; it's on sale for $19.99. At least that's their online price.

Hopefully EA will follow the pattern with Mass Effect around a year or so from now.

Another good quote from 2kGames rep.

Our other methods of copy protection remain. You will still have to activate your copy, and you will still need to keep the disc in the drive. SecuROM has not been removed -- just the activation limits on number of installs and number of computers you can install BioShock on simultaneously.

As I promised that the activation limits would go away, I can promise that if we ever stop supporting BioShock in the ways you speak of, we will release a patch so that the game is still playable. I believe, as you seem to, that BioShock will be the kind of game we will want to revisit 5, 10, 15 or more years from now. I want my copy to be playable, just as you do, and so does 2K.

Being that theres already a fixed .EXE for Mass Effect in the wild, I dont see why they dont just do it already instead of hassling their paying customers.

Umm, no, not really.

SecuROM is still there, it just doesn't limit you to the number of installs.

It still installs/hides all the SecuROM files.

What I really wonder is what happens if their Servers are down and you've installed too many times?
They said you don't need to install any Patches - so that means they just told the Servers to say "okay", so if the Servers are down (and they don't come out with another Patch) my guess is you're hosed.

Nice try . . . .

I have an unopened copy sitting on my desk. While this is good news, I still don't want securom touching my windows install. Will they release a completely securom free version of the damn game? Can they provide some sort of patch that'll allow installation without securom?

Yeah, I'm waiting for the same thing for:

Orange Box
Crysis
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Spore

I doubt it will happen though . . . .

why not do it from the start and keep the forums clear of all the whiny bitching?

The bullshit is thick with this one.

"As promised, all activation restrictions ... have been removed from Bioshock PC as of today!"
"You will still have to activate ..."

The whole activation is a restriction. Any hardware, software or availability requirement without which the activation will not go through is an activation restriction.

Requiring a network to be present.
Requiring a server to be up at the other end.
Requiring that server to give the nod before successful install.

No sale 2K. Shame - this game was one of my big motivations for getting a PC, but I'm not paying a cent for it before the call-home part of the DRM is gone, or the game is priced like the rental it (de facto) is.

Stop being so paranoid. I've beaten the game like 3x since it has been out -- reinstalled it about 4 times without issue. By the time there are no more servers to authenticate, there will be Bioshock 3.

15.00?? Securom or not. That's well worth the trip to Rapture.

I bet $15 it still installs SecuROM on your PC, only change I see is that when it contacts its server it gives you permission to install.

I don't care about this one way or another. Cracks that remove Securom entirely from the game have been available since a week after the game's release. This doesn't change anything.

Another sign that hell is freezing over, Creative is giving Audigy owners the ability to play EAX games with Alchemy in Vista for free (refunds going to the people who payed for it). Looks like the entire Audigy series is going to get a driver update as well (last one was in 2006?), beta driver for Audigy line.

What is next? nVidia listening to their customers and updating the nForce3 drivers to solve issues?

I bet $15 it still installs SecuROM on your PC.
It still requires activation online, it still installs Sony's SecuROM DRM on your machine, and it still requires the CD / DvD to be in the drive. They just dropped the install cap. I really like games that require online activation AND the DvD in the drive.

Hmm, this is good news. Not great news, but good news. I've had an unopened copy of BioShock waiting on my shelf for just this day. Now I don't have to worry about formatting and losing out on installs. Does this mean that I can loan the disc to my friend to play too? After all, that's not piracy, and it still requires the disc to be in the drive.
