Buy FS/FT XFX 6600 GT for $100 or Newegg's 6800GS for 180?

Is there a big difference in the two? Looking at 3dmark scores for my processor (3500+ Venice) it doesn't seem like there's that much difference, 500-700 points. But is 500-700 points worth 80 bucks? I'll be using the card to play KOTOR, HL2, etc. Nothing incredibly GPU intensive.

Any suggestions?

the 6800GS is substantially better, like a lot better, 3DMark05 scores are worth NOTHING I tell you, try looking at some real world game performance tests. But if you only plan to play KOTOR and HL2 then by all means save yourself 80 bucks and get the 6600GT.

Yeah, I don't game much, but my new comp came with just a Radeon xpress 200 chipset...and no DVI for my flat panel...but i got KOTOR for xmas and the bro just beat HL2. Probably no BF2 or anything of that nature.

Well if you just want to play HL2 and BF2 the 6600GT is enough.

Once you start to up the resolution and image quality is where the 6800GS crushes it.
An OC'ed 6800GS is on par with if not superior to a 6800Ultra, so it's just a question of whether or not you can justify the extra $75-$100 for games.

Also, I think you'll be able to find a 6600GT for a little cheaper if you wait / look around. Not much cheaper, but a tad bit. :p.

I sense another happy sr1710nx owner!

Remember that for a video card with lots of great big hairy man-pipes you're going to need a studly power supply. The delta 250 watt PS in that box is a quality unit, but it's not going to feed a ravenous card like a 6800 of any flavor. A 6600GT mmmmay work, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

Didja see my thread in hot deals? The egg still has a bunch of refurb 6600 non-GT and X600s in the $60-70 range. For old games like HL2 and KOTOR it'll be plenty.

I've been giving the integrated X200 chipset a spin, and it shockingly manages to run things I wouldn't expect it to. Far Cry is borderline playable at 800x600, all eye candy off.

Of course, dual channel low latency PC3200 ram may have something to do with that. =)

What do you mean 500-700 points. The 6800GS scores about 6000, the 6600GT maybe 3500.

Anyway, if you ask me the 6800GS is a better deal for what you're getting, but if you don't plan on playing anything else than those few games, the 6600GT is sufficient. But once you crank up the AA and resolution...
