Buy external DVD writer, or IDE and put into USB2 enclosure?

It seems that internal IDE DVD writers are significantly cheaper than their external counterparts.

I've seen external USB 2.0 Hard Drive enclosures, so I was wondering if it is possible to: (1) buy an external usb 2.0 enclosure for CD drives, and (2) put the DVD writer into it?

What downsides are there to this?

Every external burner I've ever seen is just an IDE drive with an IDE --> USB adapter.

I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to put it together yourself.

is one 5.25" enclosure any better/worse than any other one? What should i look for? I've seen them ranging from $50 to $125 in price.

USB 2.0 External Enclosure $30 + $5.95 (S&H) I'm picking up the same style except its Firewire/USB 2.0.
