Not sure how long this one will last, but if you go to http://www.dyndnsservices.com there is a banner at the top for existing members to upgrade to a newer version for only $29.95. I tried it out, and when you go through the upgrade link, it only charges $29.95 for the full new version even if you are not an existing user! I paid and received the download link automatically! I even e-mailed tech support for a little help setting things up and they were happy to help no problems at all! I have been keeping an eye on this site, debating on whether I wanted to fork over the $150 or not. I couldn't be happier right now!

FYI for those that don't know what this is, you can get a description of dyndns at http://www.technopagan.org/dynamic Basically, with this software, you can be a dyndns provider just like dyndns.org.

Well, if you just want to be a "client" then you can find free dyndns everywhere. This is not the same thing. With this you can be the dyndns provider, meaning that someone like you would be getting your service from me.

And I plan on offering the service to customers in my area that are currently paying $100 a month for a static ip. I will make that 29.95 back and Then some when I get it all set up! :)

And they are not offering the "service", they are offering the "software" so you can run your own service. This has the complete server software and the client software!

What is yours different from the below one, which is FREE ?

http://www.dyndns.org/services/pricing.html

Service Service Fee

Dynamic DNS Free Dynamic DNS service for up to 5 hostnames.
Static DNS Free Static DNS service for up to 5 hostnames.

hmm..

I would not host a business site on a home server though.

> Basically, with this software, you can be a dyndns provider just like dyndns.org

Why would you be a dyndns PROVIDER when other company offer the service free ?

There is no difference really. even the pay scheme is basically the same, except for the fact that it's my service. I plan on offering local businesses VPN gateway services. To each his own. there are many competitors in the dyndns market and so a million reasons not to run a dyndns service, but there is also a million reasons someone would like to run there own service. It is perfect for me as I already have a few customers who will use my service and I plan on including it for a bit extra to customers who buy VPN routers etc.. S*** man it was $30.00!!!!! what would you expect to pay if dyndns.org were selling their server applications.

I don't understand this. Does this software offer anything not in BIND (the DNS server
included in linux), or for that matter anything not in microsoft's own DNS server?

Not only is it free, they have amazing e-mail support, i had trouble setting up apache a few years ago, even though it was`nt really their problem at all since the dyndns service was working, they still could help me out with the apache config.

But thats not the best part, the best part is:
http://www.dyndns.org/about/stories/redundancy/

I have no idea how anybody could ever compete against this.
1. Free.
2. Good support.
3. Perfect uptime (100%)

And i can vouch for the uptime part, ive used the service for 2 years at least, and it has never been down.

i paid dyndns.org $10.00 for an account upgrade which gives me to assign 20 additional hostnames. i offer this service to my clients as part of a support package. i can live with paying an additional $10.00 for 20 hostname upgrades, as i don't have to manage the server.

i can't justify setting up my own server, even if the software was free, because it is so convenient to let them handle it.

But if clients can get dynamic DNS services for free.... why exactly would you want to go into the business of providing such services? Seems like the profit margins are pretty slim on a free product....

it's information he is selling. a lot of people don't know about or don't care to find out enough about the free services to set it up themselves.

Exactly, they don't want to know the difference between static and dynamic IPs, or to be bothered setting up a free service. For them, time is money (they hope!) and paying a few bucks extra for someone else to do the dirty work is not a problem.

.Net server being about the same as 2000 server. I would imagine it would work on .net server although I see no information about this on their site, and I do not have a .net server to test on.

Its not just DNS it DynDNS there is a huge difference. Basically this software which I love by the way, is basically an addon for microsft DNS that allows you to offer DynDNS services to users world wide. The only real draw back I have found is a Linux Client is not included. Allthough the information needed to create one is included. And I have as of yesterday seen some free open source DynDNS Servers, I have tested two both which work fine but this was much simpler for me both to setup and support is great.

It seems that many people are confused about what dyndns really is. There is a technical description here:

http://www.technopagan.org/dynamic

But in simple laymen's term, basically dyndns takes the place of a static ip. So, if you buy the software, you can offer customers the equivalent of a static ip.

As people with a static ip pay @ $100 a month for their static ip, some of them would definitely be willing to pay for "your service" at a cheaper price.

Well, I hope that I explained it simply enough. It is a bit more complex than that, but I just wanted people to have a basic idea of what this really is.
