i've been looking at laptops for the past months. since yonah is just around the corner (Q1 2006), is the performance increase, battery life, etc, worth the wait?

Performance will be greater if you run things that can take advantage of dual cores. The single core yonah, should have very slightly better performance and power savings that dothan, but I doubt it's really enough to wait. And yonah, especialy the dual cores, will probably be rather pricey at first.

i'd buy a sonoma laptop now but they have a slightly shorter battery life than the first generation centrinos, comparing similar models that is. hopefully the yonah core will reduce heat and increase battery life.

after reading some information about the new yonah core, it will feature power management imporvements and thermal output. looks like i will wait.

One other thing to keep in mind, the choices will also include both a number of Turion64 and dual core Turion notebooks next year.
It will certainly be worth a look...

Haha, it took me so long to get that...

EDIT: Now back to the topic at hand (heh, your thread got kind of hijacked).

If you think about it Q1 is 4 months and a half away. Then you have to remember that Yonah is getting released DURING Q1, not at the beginning of it, so add another 1-3 months. That's a long time to wait for something that WILL be very expensive at launch. If you plan on buying something insanely high-end then I guess you could wait it out (but damn, that's a long wait), but if you dont plan on buying something top of the line with and dont plan on doing much gaming on your laptop then just get a middle-of-the-road dothan laptop right now and you can always upgrade later if you feel the need. I never multitask on my laptop and I dont game on it, so basically any laptop fits my needs as long as it has decent power consumption (I'm actually gonna wait for the dual-core Taylors to come out before I upgrade, so I can have a greater variety to chose from).

Back on track: Yonah will undoubtedly be a faster chip, but it will also carry a very significant price premium.

Id go dothan now.

If you are a very patient man who's willing to wait until Yonah's released + 2-3 months for the prices to go down, then I would wait for Yonah. If you want a laptop within the next 6 months, probably Dothan.

they have released some of the pricing for the dual-core yonahs (projections)....from what i have seen, not much more (25% or so) than the surrent single core prices...

Would that be 25% or so more than the current highest end single core, or 25% or so more than the current same MHz single core? Would be interesting to know. Still, quite a wait. I'd say buy a Dothan now, and if you really have to own one of the dual-core notebooks half-one year from now, then sell the old notebook and buy the new one.

i belive it was mostly off current speeds...but remember that price drops would also occusr from now to then, the if a 250$ processor now was made dual core for say ~320$...that 250$ processor might have been cut to about 200$ when the dual core was released...but still, the prices intrigue me....

He's probably right. I'm extremely happy with my Dell Inspiron 700m. Yonah does sound really promising but if you really need a laptop waiting a year is probably not necessary. Heck, I'd love to have two 1.6 GHz CPUs in my lappie but I needed it a lot sooner.

If I were you I would try to keep the costs down (I spent <1000 on mine all told).
