But remember, they charge sales tax in certain states, Like Tennessee; man I hate that!!! Anyway, I got away with one for $227 shipped last night. That was still cheaper than any vendor on iBuyer.net.

Too bad. According to this morning's newspaper I will have to pay sales tax on all the items I have bought online. Seems like there is an old law for 'use tax' to collect sales tax. This years tax forms have a new column and a two page explanation about the law asking people from Ohio to pay ST at 5.75% for all the purchases made online or through catalog in the year 2000.

This is UNFAIR! The reason I bought stuff online most times are I would save some money by not paying ST. If I have to pay ST I would end up paying more than buying it locally at a B&M.

The Ohio government will get details of purchases from all major online vendors and match it with tax returns. There is a fine of 15% if the tax is not paid.

Dude, no offense meant, and I understand your frustration, but why is this unfair? On the contrary, it's unfair to penalize B&M stores. All should compete ona level playing field. Taxes are no fun, but if we're going to collect them, they ought to be fair.

that is not fair they tried to get sale taxes. Sales tax can only apply to companies in their state. Trying to get taxes from other states' companies is ripping off.

DaveH,

Look at it this way. I want to buy a Camcorder. It is available at BestBuy at $2000. The same is available at two online stores for $1800, one in OH and other in NY. I bought it at the NY store (I am in OH) to avoid the tax but paid $50 on shipping while the OH store had free shipping. I am trying to save $53.5 here (103.5 in tax at 5.75% less 50 shipping). You could have many permutations and combinations of this.

Now that they tell me they are going charge ST for the purchase, I end up loosing $50 on the shipping. My point is, they should have made this very clear last year and should not try to apply retrospectively, even though the law was enacted in 1934.

I have no problem paying taxes on my purchases provided I know that I before made my purchase!

You really think they have the manpower to match up every online transaction that applies under the new (old) law? I'd be surprised if they did.

ummmm
that just is not right,I do not know how they could let you buy something then
a year later make you pay extra. It's like buying a car at the first of the year, paying ST
and then at the end of the year saying they need more money so every one who bought a car
and paid 6% ST we are going to raise that to 7% ST when you file your state tax???????
I could see them saying starting next year you have to pay sales tax on online sales.
I would not pay any tax for online sales and let the state do all the leg work to find
out what you bought and who you bought it from. That way if you do have to pay a ST
you know that the state actually WORKED for thier money.

Well I understand from the article that only 3% shop online. Going by the tax bracket it should be fairly easy to target people with the help of credit card companies.

Also, they have a fine of 15%.

it will be impossible for them to do this.

say, if ohio has 10 million people (not sure on this), and 3 percent of it shop online. That's still 300,000+ people! Even if they process for the entire year, they need to do 1000 per month. And how do they know if you shopped on line or not?

What if you didn't use a CC, etc?

It will be impossible for them to follow this through, as I also expect comsumer groups to sue against this.

Wedeso's right, they just can't do it. I don't live in Ohio and boy am I glad! Aren't they the first state to have a county enact a law against cellular phone use while driving?! If so, Ohio bureaucrats need to listen to their constituents or go home!
