I am a bass player for the most part, but do like to mess around with the guitar too. Right now I have an epiphone les paul that is ok, but my friend is selling his fender mexican strat.

It sounds fine, plays great too. Couple things though, one is that it is missing on of the springs in the back plus the plate is missing. The second is that it has some dents and physical damage to it but nothing too major. Should I buy it for 80 bucks and sell off my epiphone les paul?

Sounds like a great deal. The missing spring will cost next to nothing, and who cares about a couple of dents on an inexpensive guitar?

I really, really miss my old American Telecaster . . .

That's actually a great deal. If it's missing a spring, just make sure it's laterally balanced. If it's missing one of the left or right springs, just pull off the middle spring and replace it with the missing spot. Dents and scratches? Who cares as long as it sounds and plays great.

I wouldn't SELL the LP for the Strat, but it'll make a nice complement. I personally don't care for LPs due largely to their weight, but having both and LP and a Strat (albeit an Epiphone and Mexican Fender) offers you the best of both worlds.
