Buy a PS3 now or wait?

I'm looking at a PS3 mainly for Blu-ray playback as well as some light gaming (mainly Warhawks). I've decided I don't need backwards compatibility, so one of the newer models is fine. The 40gb package looks pretty good and has a coupon for 5 free Blu-ray movies. Should I go ahead and buy now, wait for Black Friday, or wait for a holiday bundle? I'm not in any rush.

If you're only looking at it as a BluRay player, I dont see a problem with getting it now... I'm still waiting for a game that I absolutely have to have before I buy mine.

Hurry, before KMart figures out this coupon should exclude video game hardware. Their margin is nowhere near 20% on PS3s, so they're taking a loss on these.

Pick it up. Plenty of good games.

Kaido, you do know that the 40GB version only has 2 usb ports, but more importantly, it does not have built in wifi, right? So if there are any updates for your PS3 (like newer firmware that will update your Blu-Ray profile), you'll need to physically plug in a network cable or burn the update to CD/DVD. If neither of those options matter to you, then the 40GB will do just fine for you.

I personally love the built in wifi on my 60GB PS3.

40GB does have wifi, just no card reader and no PS2 BC.

Also, you can update from a USB flash drive or HD as well as from wifi, wired and CD.

If you don't care about the 40 gig missing a few things on it compared to the 60, go for it. It's noticeably quieter than my 60 gig (for silent scenes in movies). The 60 gig isn't a jet engine by any means however.

the 40gb has built in wifi. Only model not to come with wifi is the 20gb.

need extra USB ports, get a USB hub, 5 bucks.

Yup, I wired up the place for Gigabit over the summer 😀 I also have a large 2.5" SATA hard drive waiting to go in the PS3. There's not a K-Mart close to me, but my brother has one near him and is going to stop by his local K-Mart on his break and snag me one if they have any. The card readers don't matter to me either...my bro has a PS3 and said he never uses his card reader, plus I have plenty of card readers if I ever do need it. PS2 BC was a big issue before, but if I really want to play a PS2 game I can always just get a cheap used PS2, not a big deal. Mostly it will be a Blu-ray player with some light gaming.

then sign up for the sony card and buy ps3 at sony style store.

100 bucks credit.

I have to pay tax either way and through sonystyle its 324 after tax and 100 credit.

If I drove down to Scotts Valley between SJ and Santa cruz nearest Kmart it about 350ish.

I'd rather not drive 30 minutes and spend gas money.

Didn't work. They said (1) they don't take photocopies and (2) they hadn't been notified of that coupon. He only had access to a B&W laser printer at the time, so I don't know if a color copy would make a difference since they said they hadn't been notified of that coupon.

I'll happily use one of the combination Nyko combination USB hub/card readers that I got for $5 at Gamestop. 🙂 They're marketed for Xbox 360, but obviously they'll work on anything. I don't anticipate a real need to use them on my (future) PS3 though...

And I'd rather use wired Ethernet than wireless anyway.

A lot of people at CAG have had success. Supposedly the coupon can be found in a flyer in the pharmacy department.
