I planned on buying a computer from monarch soon but they ran out of the video card I wanted so figured I would wait till all the newer stuff comes out maybe prices will drop. So I have a 24in dell on the way and was wondering if it's worth it to upgrade my video card or will I not be able to notice a big difference because of my cpu

Current rig

Asus A7N8X-X
2 gb ram
6600gt
2500xp

So if i upgraded to a 6800gs or something would my cpu bottleneck it to much to notice an improvement?

You have a 24" dell? just get a whole new rig. Get a cheap amd processor, keep the ram, keep everything you can, upgrade and sell the rest.
all you need is new mobo maybe a psu and oh yeah get a x1900 or 7900 card FTW

When I do get a new computer i'm going to buy a prebuilt one and plan on waiting 5-6 months till that. So to hold me over is it worth getting a 6800gs or will my cpu be to slow?

Both your CPU and a 6800GSA (agp gs) will be too slow is the long and short of it. You'll be able to go up one resolution at the same settings you use now with your 6600GT, but that's still miles away from what you need for the 24" dell monitor.

You'll still get the same low minimum frame rates, what a better card will do is let you run higher res at the same settings you can tolerate with your CPU now. The performance delta between a 6800GSA and 6800GT works out to about one resolution up.

Driving that monitor natively with eye candy on in new games will require a very top end rig. Be sure your system builder is experienced in matching system components so you don't wind up with a FX-60 cpu and 6800GS video when the main use for the box is high end gaming.

Was about to place my order for a new computer at monarch but they ran out of evga 7900 gt cards. I figure the new cpus are coming out in 5 months or something and I can wait that long. I've had this computer for 3-4 years I think
