Buy a civic beater, or keep driving my car?

I currently have a modded WRX, slight ECU tune, bolt ons, and a suspension.

It gets 26-28mpg on premium. It just turned to 50k miles... however on long highway trips the suspension gets tiresome and is a bit harsh. Road noise from the low profile tires makes conversations become louder than I have to and my radio has to be turned up to compensate.

I just found out from a friends coworker that he wants to sell his automatic 1996 civic with 167k miles to me for $2200.

No rust, and everything works great, just the paint could be better. The back bumper has a big scuff mark but no biggie....

The car gets way better gas millage 30-38mpg and my insurance would only go up 7 bucks a month just doing liability insurance only.

Is this even worth buying or should I just continue to drive my car as the main ride?
 
30 miles a day

work puts me sometimes in overnight hotels 110 miles away at some crummy part of town... would rather have the civic parked outside than my wrx
 
Perhaps you should get rid of the low profiles on your current vehicle. It would improve handling and road noise significantly at the expense of aesthetics. A beater wouldn't be a bad idea though. Offer him $1800. Honda or no, it still has 167k miles. You can do better pricewise for a '97 car.

Both of those cars are high-theft targets right?, IIRC the 90's Honda's were susceptible to the shaved-key trick..
 
Sounds like a complete waste of money to save a few bucks on gas and the ride on a 96 civic is going to be sh*t, plus it will be less safe in an accident and more crap to worry about.

And $2200 for a 96 civic, really?
I can't find a civic of the 1996-2000 body style for less than 3000 with no rust around here

That's a big reason I get new cars every few years, and won't buy an older one.

It would be okay at a lower price. He wouldn't just be saving gas - he'd be saving wear and tear on his main vehicle. Having that civic wouldn't be a bad idea...but I'd look at other vehicles that can be had for less $.
