I was reading around and it appears that a new hd ati card is comming out along with a 8800 ultra soon. Will prices go down on the 8800gts or similar mid range card any time soon or should I just go ahead and buy the 8800gts 320meg version now?

The Ultra is already out and you can wait for tomorrow's review of the new ATI card before making a decision.

yeah wait a week and see what happens. Nvidia will be dropping prices, they can afford to undercut ATI because their GPU fabrication process is more refined and mature now, costing less.

I'd go for it. The 2900XT performs worse, has lower image quality, and consumes nearly 100w more at the wall as compared to the 8800GTS...not to mention it also costs more.

If you are going for the 320MB model than I would just buy it now if you can find a decent deal or rebate. The X2900XT is going to be competing with the 640MB GTS and the GTX. ATI doesn't have anything competitive announced in the 320MB GTS' price point.

At the resolutions the 8800 series is capable of, you're going to want the 640MB version. The only reason to get the 320MB is if you're really strapped for cash or have an LCD that's maxed at 1280x1024.

The new ati card has already failed imo. erratic highs and lows relative to the 8800 are not worth the HUGE amount of power this card draws. The card may only be $399, but most people will probably need to spend $100+ on a new power supply to deal with this thing. I ordered my EVGA 8800GTS640 for $330 after MIR after seeing these reviews. Why would you spend $70 more (plus the cost of a new powersupply) for performance that's roughly comparable?

so I can get the 320 meg version for 275 or the 600 meg version for 336. Is it worth the extra 60 or so bucks if i want to game at 1680x1050? does anyone even have an idea of how this card will do with crysis or newer games? I will be paring this with and oc'ed 4300 with 1x2 gig ram but i know these days the gpu is pretty damn important.

Get the 640MB version. 320MB is not enough to run 1680x1050 with AA in a lot of newer games (Oblivion, Quake 4) without taking a big performance hit.

At $329.99 AR the eVGA 8800GTS 640MB is what I would recommend if you were buying the card today.

If you are building now I'd get a 8800GTS 640 and call it a day. Best value right now. Personally I'd go for the gtx, but I want to have extra power (never touch SLI and never will).

For those of us who have a competant card now and may want a DX10 card I'd wait until there is one or 2 fully DX10 compliant games on the market and then pick a card at that time (maybe there will be a revision and older cards will drop in price significantly).

With the extra $30 instant rebate the eVGA is the way to go. I'm glad I waited one week that just saved me a few bucks. I would love to get the GTX but I really can't justify it.

thanks for the replies guys. I cant justify 800 bones for a gtx so I think im going with the 640 meg version. The only down side is that i have to wait till the 25th to put it together as I have exams till then.....Ill consider it motivation.

Yes, you can. And I believe you can do so pretty easily.

570/1700 is crap, pretty much all 8800GTS 640MB will do 600/1800 at the very least. Many users get more (600-630 core, 1900-2000 memory). Mine does 610/1900 without sweating, I can push it a bit father but I am happy where it is now. Get the 640MB for 1680x1050 if you want AA.
