out of curiosity, why is a single slot design preferential to a dual slot design?

It really isn't except for those who don't have the extra space. Dual slot coolers are very good if you want to vent hot air out of the case. Single slot coolers just recirculate the hot air back into the case.

People with SFF (small form factor) PC's may need single slot cooling solutions just for the sake of not having enough room.

I actually prefer 2-slot design to take hot air out directly. I have been using 2-slot 9800PRO(VGA-Sliencer), X850XT and now 8800GTS.
