Not sure, but I did heat that the new 90nm chips will be out in about a month. So that might be worth waiting for.

Pricewatch

Go there and plenty of places and plenty of prices for your purchasing pleasure. I would wait for the 90nm myself at this point.

I am waiting for my x800xt due Sept 10 (backordered) and I will purchase the 90nm AMD to go with it. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Sorry had a moment

Basically it is the size of the tranistors in the core. The current AMD64's are all .13 micron 130nm in size. That is really, really, really small. The next generation of AMD64's will be 90nm or .09 micron which is even smaller. This allows (supposedly) faster speeds because the transistors are closer together and allows for more cores per wafer to be produced thus bringing down production costs. The Prescott would be Intel's example of a 90nm processor. All the cpu makers are having problems with .09micron because of power leakage (to tired to explain) and heat issues. Intel can't even get 3.6's out the door, lol. It will be interesting to see how the AMD64's fair once out. They also included a core revision that supposedly gives about 5% increased performance at the same clock speed vs the .13micron cores. In other words the 2200Mghrtz (512K L2 cache) .09micron AMD64 will be about 5% faster than the same 2200Mghtrz (512K L2 cache) .13micron AMD64

Intel is having major problems due to the extremely long pipeline design of their cpus's will leakage and thermal issues that the 90nm has only exacerbated not helped. Due to the shorter pipelines and more efficient design of the AMD64 processors the 90nm should help and not hurt them will give better energy characteristics. Time will tell. AMD's arlready run cooler than the Prescott and if they have a normal 90nm transition it will become even more pronounced and Intel will have to do something. Can anyone say Dothan for the Desktop?

Remember, Steve Jobs said Apple would have 3Ghtrz G5's within a year at the release of the G5? They only made 2.5Ghtrz and that is with super special cooling. IBM fabs the G5's for Apple and they are having problems with the .09micron process.

If that is the case then don't worry about it. You're right! I am waiting for more 939 boards to come out and my x800xt Plat and that will probably be around mid September LOL. My Koolance is dripping wet waiting. Sorry couldn't help it

you bet it will be. if not for the .09 oarts but the .13 parts will drop in price bigtime once .09 hits the streets in quantities.

You can never win the tech war. You just have to be able to be happy with whats available and make a commitment. Thats why i never get the "best" thats out because a week later, it will be dethroned. 2nd best usually keeps me happy. (3500+ rather than 3800+ or even FX53...)

It never ends. I spent most of the 1990's on the sidelines until things stabilized and finally bought something only to see it become obsolete in 12 months.

Socket 939 is now obsolete:
The new AMD spec is Socket 1024.....................................which is now obsolete.
The new AMD socket is Socket 1492 which replaces it, is.. now obsolete.
The obsolete socket which replaces it has not yet been announced.

Hopefully the shortage of 3500+'s will be temporary. The 90nm processors won't be out until late in the year, so AMD has got still be making the current line. My guess is that the price drop caused lots of sales from people waiting for it. It might be that prices are back down in a couple of weeks (or less, but who knows).

With current demand, and going into the very busy back-to-school and holiday seasons, I don't expect prices to come down much. AMD will release a 4000+ Athlon64 in some three months, but it will probably price it around $800, and the 3800+ and 3500+ will likely stay at the same price, maybe discount it some 10%. 90nm will not add anything useful for the moment, it's just a simple shrink.

Yeah, but the prices in the last couple of days went up, not because of AMD rasiing prices, but because the etailers raised prices as stock and availability went down. If AMD keeps prices the same, and continues to amke and ship processors, the prices will drop back to where they were after the last AMD price drop.

I'd wait for the Nforce4 mobo's because spending $450 on an AGP video card these days when pci-e is just starting to appear is pretty tough..

I don't mind spending $400+ on a top video card that can move from upgrade to upgrade.. Atleast 1 years worth.. Also w/ Nforce4 you'll get dual sli capablities & dual core cpu support.

Regards,
Jose

Should have bought when i had the chance at 353!

ah well....

The AGP cards will be good for a while since most places have already said that they will faze the PCI-E slots in, nottally getting rid of the AGP right away.

Have I read that right? A PCI-E mobo will be made for the AMD64 soon?

Probably December for NF4. I am sure NV is doing everything possible to finish NF4 and get it to board makers so that they can sell SLI for xmas.

SIS has two A64 chipsets coming to support PCI-E. One is supposed to start sampling soon.

VIA's A64/PCI-E chipset is already sampling.

Well if that's the case, then I think it would be best (for me) to just wait for one of those motherboards to come out instead of using the money to buy and switch another mobo/vid card in the near future a few months-1 year after they make PCI-E for AMD64 motherboards.
