Busted LCD, worth repairing?

So I managed to bust the LCD on my 3 year old compaq laptop. The rest of it still kind of works, but the processor overheats quickly. I figure I have 2 options:

1. Buy and install a new LCD myself for about 300-400 bucks.

2. Part it out, sell as much as I can, but keep the hard drive.

If I go for option 2, are there places that I can unload the stuff I don't sell, like for scrap or something? Or should I sell the shell (processor, MB, other stuff that won't come out easily) on eBay? What do you think?

Heh...I've been finding prices for the display anywhere between 500-800 bucks.

Screw that, I'm parting it out. If anyone's looking for some 128MB PC100 SODIMM sticks, just let me know.

If you can find out the manufacturer's part number of the LCD chances are that you can find it for very cheap on ebay.

Hmm, good call. I already bought the external enclosure for the hard drive, but I'll keep this in mind if I want to repair it again. The thing was already on its last legs, so I don't know if it is worth it to repair.

See if anyone on eBay is selling a broken laptop that matches your model if you want to consider fixing it. Otherwise put it on ebay for parts. =P

Well i had the same thing happen to me, on a HP laptop.. new LCD would cost me $1200 (i live in iceland)..
after a few weeks of not using it at all i came up with a brilliant idea.. i have a 29" tv in my room and i hooked my laptop to it via tv out and bought a used IR keyboard with a built in muose for like $10 (really old one). Also have it networked so i can use it to watch movies, tv episodes etc etc on my tv and even browse internet on my tv when i'm lazy in bed (tv is in front of bed)

what model is it? My 3 yr old amdk6 presario 1200 mobo / cpu just died and the shell's sitting in pieces on the coffee table. If its the same model we could rebuild 1 very slow Frankenstein's laptop. Q is, tho, who would get custody of the child?
