So, I get back from spring break tonight, and I get a call on the phone. I believe it was the chief of police, and he said that he wants to come talk to me and my roomate tonight. (My roomate's not back yet) and he wants to talk to both of us before 11 tonight.

Thing is, I don't know if he's just gonna bvtch at us and just give us a warning, or what...

And, I didn't actually steal the sign off the road, I took it from a party, and just left it in the corner of my dorm room. I have abosuletely no idea how to even get the sign off the post thing on the side of the road.

Anything I can tell him to my benefit? BTW the sign was a "9th Street" sign, not a stop sign, or something that could cause a major accident....

edit: they inspect the dorms after we leave for spring break to make sure the lights are off, tv, heat, shades closed...
He said my hall director called them about it...

Update: Talked to the cop,(university cop) my roomate was there the whole time, but he didn't get charged cuz he was actually away the weekend I grabbed it. I told the cop that I found it next to the dumpster behind some apartments. He was like, "ya, I can't prove that you either took it or found it, so its gonna be "theft of item below $100"" The fine was for $285 :Q

What he did say that caught me off guard was that he was gonna hold the citation for a week, and if I can find someone dealing drugs, making fakes, or other theft, the citation would be handeled internally, and not go through the courts, and it would most likely be less of a fine.

I know plenty of people selling ******, and fakes, but the problem is finding someone I don't like and have evidence against them. I didn't even know cops could do this to teens, and I HATE the idea of being a rat/narc.

One of the guys on my floor has a family of lawyers, so hes gonna see what they can do. I have over a month before my court date, april 28th, so ill have to see what I want to do. Don't they have to PROVE that theft occured, and not just charge me with it?

Yup... tell him, "Yes sir, officer sir. I'm a dumb ass... I'm really sorry. I figured it was nice and flat and shiney, and I could use it to cut lines of coke on, but since I can't afford coke I'll just roll blunts on it instead."

when the mom worked at a steel recycling plant she brought home a stop sign (retired) one day. Cops saw it in garage and threated to arrest dad if he didnt immediatly surrender it!

That police officer has got to be enjoying life right now. He's got a couple college kids squirming.

"I found this sign back in the ghetto. I wasn't sure of the best method of returning said piece of property, I figured I'd be wasting your time taking it to the Police Station."

You know that you can actually buy custom made street signs online, right, so tell him that's where you got it.

Lol. He's gonna send you to the dean's office and the dean will have you require a couple of hours of community service.

That's what happened with my neighbor a couple of years ago.

Wow your hall director is on a power trip. Anyways, here is what is going to happen. You'll meet with him (do not arrange to meet with him at your dorm) he will tell you what you did was dangerous, you will appologize profusely and tell him how you came to posess the sign (I probably wouldn't tell him that you stole it) then he will say something like "you have two options, either give the the sign back, or I can arrest you" at which point you appologize profusely again while giving him the sign. Tomorrow night you go back to ninth street and get back your sign :p

I guess it would be impossible for there to be an accident because someone is looking around trying to find out if this street is 9th street ?

Oh, the hall director already took the sign, I would have thought she would have at least talked to me or something...

The person that reported it is an obvious douchebag. Pull the frozen pee on a tray prank on him/her and repeat periodically.
