for all of you unsophisticated cretins, banksy is the picasso/rembrandt/da vinci of grafitti. he has drawn a graffiti of a beaver in an unsavory section of east brooklyn that is drawing crowds.

and if something draws crowds, enterprising businessmen like these fellows will block it off, charge crowds $20 to look at it, and threaten to destroy it if they dont pay. all while acting like thugs and swaring and drinking heavily.

Methinks you misunderstand the point of graffiti art.
I'd be equally critical of a random, non-official person be he white or of any other race/ethnicity charging for entry into a public park.

It's a racket. Doesn't matter if they are white, black, hispanic/latino, asian, russian, etc.

All the race-bating above aside, I don't get all the banksy induced fervor. Some of his stuff is pretty good. But it certainly isn't mind-shattering. I guess stencils are cool. And he uses spray paint fairly well.

I am also fairly sure "he" isn't only one person. Pretty sure it is the group of street artists "followers" who do all his "promoting" (aka make all the money off of "him").

It is a pretty cool marketing gimmick. Create a larger than life outlaw artist that no one has ever seen or met, who's art is never permanent except for the pictures.

You do realise people are "destroying" aka painting over his work anyway?
These guys, if anything, are preserving it and making sure people don't paint over it, unlike what has already happened elsewhere.
They are spending their time protecting what you so valiantly claim is "art", which otherwise would get destroyed. Maybe they deserve to get paid.
