Businessmen, how do you feal about monopoly?

I'm very close to someone in business who has seen a lot. Employees quit, they have to fight for their customers constantly, they have to sue people, throw coffee and cheap doughnuts into rooms with people in them, lose contracts, etc. Today. Right now even. Our current Economy.

Yesterday I watched some kids play monopoly, and for the first time in my life I just couldn't stomach it. A year ago I would have been wowed by the suspense and the action and how "Rich and excessive" it all is, but now all I can think about is that this stuff is real. I imagined it being my friend who's in this shit, who could get foreclosed by a bank at any minute.

*sigh*

I don't know. I don't know what to think. I know it's a game but it hits really close to home, and I realize now how some people don't like money games. The stuff that they portray isn't cool or badass when you know the actual reality of it.

I know, right? The little guy with the top hat and mustache looks like some fucking Disney creation now! So sad....

Monopoly in itself is bad, but what I find is just as bad is the things that encourage it. Patents, copyright, etc. For example, how often do we hear of lawsuits involving company B using a technology that has aspects of company A's technology. (ex: Samsung makes a phone that is white, the same color as Apple's phones) Normally this would create competition as both need to keep evolving to stay on top (ok maybe not over a color but you get the idea), but in this current system, company A just needs to sue company B. Not only will they be getting a ton of free cash, but company B has to stop producing what they were producing to make money in first place or has to spend more time redesigning a new product as company A now has monopoly over that type of product.

If they got rid of patents and copyright, there would be an explosion of new products and innovations and monopolies would be far and few between. I don't think they would go away, MS would probably still dominate in the enterprise world for example, but at least it would open way more doors to smaller companies to have a fighting chance.

As for the actual game, I have not played it in a long time. 😛

It clicked right about there.

Yeah, I hate it when I land on chance in real life and end up going to jail.

Welcome to life motherfucker...shit just got real!

That doesn't make any sense. If there are no patents or copyright, then anything that a company pours massive amounts of R+D into would just be reverse engineered and copied by some Chinese firm for a fraction of the price. Then what incentive would companies have to invest and push technologies forward?

Think McFly, Think!!!

If you play with someone who actually knows how to play, there is practically no skill at all to that game. It all depends on who gets lucky dice rolls, and who doesn't.

How do I feel about Monopoly the board game or monopoly in general?

As for the board game - it's fun.

As for monopoly in the business sense - it is sometimes ideal to have a monopoly in some cases. Power and water companies come to mind as a necessary monopoly. It's not practical for multiple water companies each with their own delivery system.

In other cases, monopoly is both good and bad. I think it is bad if the company with the monopoly keeps that monopoly by stifling competition. However, if a company has a monopoly simply because they are the best in that industry and nobody else has the skills to compete with them, I see no problem with it.

I see the Canadian educational system isn't doing any better than the U.S. system.
