business use of Facebook

Hi all, "Management" has heard somewhere that we need to have a Facebook page.

I'm not familiar with Facebook and question the benefit because we already have a fully functioning website to conduct daily business.

This is a non-profit info-only situation where we aren't competitive and have no need to seek out new customers.

So would any of you kind readers be willing to enlighten me as to the point of using Facebook in addition to the current website?

Thanks in advance for the input!

I don't have a business that uses FB but it's easier to send out information. Seems like a lot of businesses use facebook. Even some like Newegg, Dave and Busters.

it's a good way to update people on events that are going on, especially if they don't check their email too much (which i've found that a lot of people are doing these days). for example, i went to a couple of things at a bar nearby because i found out about it through FB.

A surprising number of people use Facebook. It is a good spot for people to get updated at any time. They are more likely to check their Facebook than your website.

my brother has worked in web analytics for about the last 12 years.

one of the papers he showed me was a long description of the use of social networking in the Obama campaign. depending on how 'viral' things go, it tends to ad 5% to 15% to exposure, and, hopefully, sales.

i think overall there is some consensus that it works.

e.g. Michael Williams, Repub. gov. candidate in Texas

he's taking a page from the Obama playbook and using all the major social net. sites. probably because some consultant told him to.

Facebook is somewhat like a social portal. The ability for a business to penetrate into someones social portal allows them a more direct link to their customers. For example, if a thousands of people become fans of XYZ Company, the may see any special event when using Facebook.

Is it not still full of virus and spyware problems, like AOL?
