Business Systems Question

Hello everyone. 🙂

I'm purchasing some desktops for my business, and am curious about two things.

The most important requirement I have is that I be able to use dual monitors. This isn't for something graphics intense like CAD, but for ease of use purposes.

I'm looking at some Dell Optiplex refurbished systems that come with the "512MB ATI Radeon HD 4550." I believe this supports dual monitors via a double density DVI output, but I want to make sure I'm correct on this.

The second question is whether or not I should go with an I7 2800 chip, or an I5 3200 chip. I'm thinking the I7 will be better, but I'm just not up to speed on chips any more.

Thanks for your help. 🙂

I'm unable to comment on the Video card, but if it has dual outputs there's no reason it wouldn't have that capability.

Depends on if the i5 is dual core or quad.

i5 @ 3.2Ghz is gonna be a dual core. The i7 @ 2.8GHz is gonna be either an 860 or a 930 (probably the former). I would go with the quad.

As for monitor, are you looking at the Optiplex 980? The 4550 that comes with that is 1 DVI, 1 DisplayPort. You can of course use adapters like this.

mfenn, thanks for your help.

To make sure I'm understanding you, you're saying to definitely go with the i7, because it is a quad core?

And is DisplayPort basically HDMI? Thanks for the headsup on the adapter!

Yes, if the prices are similar, then go there is no reason not to go with the quad.

As for DisplayPort, it's actually quite a bit different than HDMI. Think of it as the successor to DVI for PCs. Look up the wiki for more.

Thanks, I went ahead and got the systems. 🙂

I think I'm seeing a DP -> HDMI adapter listed in the build sheet for each system, so I don't think I'll even have to buy that. 🙂

Is display port "the standard?" I thought that my laptop (M4400) had an HDMI port in the back, but now I'm wondering if it might actually be a display port.

Your laptop probably has HDMI. I would still call DVI "the standard" right now, but DP will be getting there for PC displays. It's really nice because you can daisy-chain DP monitors, thus avoiding a mass of thick DVI cables everywhere. It's also royalty-free, which doesn't matter to end users, but manufacturers really that aspect.

Wow. That would be really, really nice mfenn! Daisy chained monitor cables.... these things can obviously handle some serious bandwidth.
