Business Majors: Which Financial Calculator?

I am required to have a Financial Calculator (as opposed to a Scientific or a Graphing) for my Finance course and I'm trying to decide between the HP 10B-II and the TI BAII Plus. From what I can gather, the HP has a slightly higher user rating, but the TI has a couple more functions. I'm leaning towards the HP simply for aesthetic reasons because I think that TI's have gotten progressively uglier since the middle of the 1990's. Anyone have a compelling reason why I should choose one over the other?

if you get an HP, get the 17B-II... thats my first choice
then the TI BA II plus

I would not touch the 10B with a 10 foot pole.

I still use my BA-II+ from college but I got that about 4 years ago. Still, the price is right. Just remember the calculator should be used to speed things up buy should be a substitute for knowing the formulas. Many people I knew got fancy financial calculators only to see their investment nullified by profs that worked around the capabilities of the calculators.

EDIT: BTW, my BA-II+ is a ugly dark poo brown and tacky white letters. Have they changed the design since then?

Any idea where I can even find a 17B-II? Haven't seen them anywhere, it's always either the 10B-II or the 12C. I'm guessing the 17B has been discontinued. I'm thinking that the BA-II+ is what I'll end up with. Maybe I can switch my new (and ugly) BA-II+ with my dad's old BA-II+. On second thought, he'd probably have a fit.

EDIT: The new BA-II+ looks like TI's current Scientific calcs, all swoopy, which I think is a trifle unprofessional. My dad's old (and I mean OLD) BA-II+ is metal with a silvery-gold color to the case and cream colored buttons. It has a khaki vinyl cover for it. It's a handsome calculator.

I'll vouch for the BA II+

I've seen plenty of loan officers use them, if that helps any.

There are some features about it I don't like, and it can be a bit odd.

Once you get used to it though it's really simple. Entering numbers is straight forward, and getting the results are just as easy. Just make sure you read the manual and set it up correctly.

I would be lost without my HP 12C.

[edit] I've had my HP 12C for 8 years. Prior to that I had the BAII PLUS but it quit only after a year of usage.

Unfortunately, I don't have $70.00 to spend on a calculator right now. Anyway, I'm off to Office Depot to see what I can find. Thanks for the advice. I'll stay away from the 10B-II (even if it is a very handsome calculator).

hmm... sad that the 17B II is discontinued...

make sure you get the BAS II PLUS

big difference

RIP... 17B
Yeah. On HP's website only the 10B-II was showing up. The others were more expensive than I could afford right now anyway. When I come back for my MBA I'll invest in something like an HP 19B-II if I can find one.

hahahahaaahhaha

you are picking a calculator on looks?! hahaha make sure it matches your purse and shoes woman.

If you need statistics, TVM, PVIF and that sort of thing I really dig the BA 2+, although I think it may be harder to use at first rather than the HP, it's really gonna be up to you to try it out and see how you like it.
Yes mine is a nasty poo brown too, but I would certainly NOT base your purchase decision on style.
I'm not sure if HP has a solutions BBS, but back when I had issues getting something to figure correctly TI's support online was top notch.

I just bought a TI BAII Plus as I needed it for my CFA exam. I would recommend it in case you are thinking about doing the exam, as only 2 calculators are allowed - the TI, and the HP12C.

i wish i had a financial calculator when i was sitting with the finance thief, er, manager, at the car dealer... they padded my payments like $10 and i told them excel didn't give me that payment based on the apr and principle... buncha BS... i bet my 48G can do that sorta thing too (since it can do damn near everything else)
