WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's standing with the public improved over the previous week as he made a highly visible effort to manage the consequences of the second major hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast in a month, a new poll out Thursday found.

Bush's job approval rating in the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll climbed to 45 percent, and 71 percent said they approved of his handling of Hurricane Rita, which struck land Saturday near the Texas-Louisiana border.

Only the far left and the handlers of the obstructionist Dems are blaming Bush for the hurricanes. The mainsteam can see how well the feds have done and the failure of the LA state government.

you know things are in the toilet when the right-wingers come in to post up a 45% approval rating

He handled the much weaker hurricane with far less damage better?
NO SH!T!

Bush is still polling extremely low, Rita was a speed bump relative to all the other issues on the table. Weren't the republicans around here saying the feds had no business in hurricane preparedness? Of course they have no problem flaunting the poll numbers when he does stick his nose in it and comes out half decent.

So . . . 45% is the new Republican majority?

Certainly not a majority, but as far as public opinion goes, it is fairly average for a standing President...given the criticisms against Bush, you would think his approval rating would drop into the 20% range.

I think we'll see a healthy decline as soon as the [new] Abu Gharib stories go public.
It will be curious to see how the spin machine handles this one.

How can you spin serious violations of human rights?

by attacking those who want to release the photos as freedom-haters

45% is greater than the Democrats' proportion in the Senate. The way they demand things you'd think they thought they are the majority.

Send a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter to take "responsibility" for these human rights violations.

Suppress the release of the photos.

Go on the offensive...assume an aggressive stance of "the terrorists have no respect for international law, and our military did what it had to do." Sort of a, why play by the rules when no one else seems to abide by them, argument.

You seem to be doing a good job spinning this one. Hell, Clinton was in the 60s during his impeachment and the economy was doing great back then.

The skewed Gallup Poll is nothing to get excited about.

They change their weightings when it's politically convenient.

Actually, I think in recent polls they've weighed in more dems than republicans, unlike the usual.
