WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- President Bush said he presumes the U.S. warning system for predicting tsunamis and other natural disasters is in order, but he stopped short of definitively backing the infrastructure currently in place.

"I presume that we are in pretty good shape. I think our location in the world is such that we may be less vulnerable than other parts, but I am not a geologist, as you know," Bush told reporters in Crawford, Texas.

"I can't answer your question specifically: Do we have enough of a warning system for the West Coast? I am now asking that to our agencies and government to let us know," Bush said in response to a question about the U.S. warning system as he made his first public comments since the devastating earthquake and ensuing tsunami that has so far killed at more than 75,000 people in Asia. See full story.
I'm surprised he's not asking God? Bush hasn't shown he has much use for science throughout his administration. Why would he start now?

Actually, I had read that we detected the tsunami 15 minutes after the quake, but didn't know who to warn in those countries to get people to a safe distance.

Similar news story

Strange that we knew from here, but they had no idea from there (or at least no way to warn).

actually, it's easy enough (well, relatively...) to build a system to generate a warning... the hard part is getting the info to the folks whose life is in danger... seeing how natiure rarely gives you more than a couple hours, the system would necessarily have to involve a direct 'broadcast' from the detecting lab to the 'end-users' with little possibility of governmental decision making (interference?)

now imagine hundreds of islands, with folks farming land or out fishing at sea... how do you communicate with them? its not like you can just flash a warning on the tv screen, or text-message everyone....

Not a geologist, yet obsessed with Iraq.

Ya know hawaii has an excllent system. Maybe we could spend a few billion and take notes from hawaii to protect the west and east coast. It's bought to happen again for west coast it's only a matter of time.

I'm assuming your assertion here would be geography, not geology, right? Corny at best. Flawed at worst.
