<< The Bush administration, seeking to overcome Chinese opposition to its missile defense program, intends to tell leaders in Beijing that it has no objections to the country's plans to build up its small fleet of nuclear missiles, according to senior administration officials. >>

Actually probably a smart move.....but still dangerous, especially if no effective shield materializes any time soon.

Riiiiight. And in two years, Bush tells the American people that the nuclear race with China means that we have to "rebuild" our military...how soon the suckers will forget.

I dont think he should agree to China building up their nuclear arsenal, but OTOH, what can the US do to stop them if the US wanted to?
Other than bombing them now, I cant think of any way that would stop them from doing it.

Economic sanctions and harsh words sure wont have any effect.

No kidding. Here is this for irony. We "support" china's build up of nuclear weapons so that we could gain international support for our missle defense shield. What if one day we have to use this shield against china?

It is like giving out guns so that we could find more reasons to buy kevlar vests.

I'm proud to be part of the majority that didn't elect bush into office.

?The question is, can you accept another 50 or 60 nuclear-tipped missiles aimed at the United States at a time that Americans believe that they are no longer being targeted?? asked Bates Gill, an expert in Chinese nuclear strategy at the Brookings Institution.

Bates Gill !!

Would the gullible idiots please read a credible news story? Here is the actual situation.

Quoted in relevant part:
"No one likes the fact that modernization is going on," said the official. But "if we stopped all our missile defense plans," China would not cease taking steps to build up its nuclear arsenal, the official added, saying "modernization pre-dates" U.S. proposals for a missile system.

And...
The administration also sought to make it clear that it is not giving a green light to China to build up its nuclear arsenal in order to stem the country's criticism of the proposed U.S. missile system to shoot down incoming missiles...Bush and his aides have long said such a system is not aimed at countering China's nuclear arsenal, but is in response to threats from what the White House calls "rogue" states, such as Iran and North Korea.
