WASHINGTON ? On the eve of his second inauguration, President Bush on Wednesday urged the nation to move beyond partisanship to advance the cause of peace and freedom, as he rehearsed the speech that will launch his second term.

"I am eager and ready for the work ahead," the nation's 43rd president told a shivering evening throng gathered near the White House to cheer him on the eve of his oath taking.

Mindful of polls showing a closely divided nation in the wake of a bitterly contested re-election campaign, Bush sought to rise above political rancor, telling the gathering, "An inauguration is a time of unity for our country. With the campaign behind us, Americans lift up our sights to the years ahead and to the great goals we will achieve for our country."

Offering a brief preview of today's address, the president said, "I will speak about freedom. This is the cause that unites our country and gives hope to the world and will lead us to a future of peace. We have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom, and America will always be faithful to that cause."

"The president will talk about the power of freedom ... (and) about how the values and ideals that we hold so dearly, our deepest-held beliefs, promote our most vital interest.

wonder what that is?

That's it. What more proof do we need that that mysterious square on Dubya's back is the alien controlled remote control :p

You know, Bush didn't exactly invent the whole "We're on a mission from God" :)P) theme for the Presidency, right? Some of you guys act like this is some totally new thing that Bush and Rove concocted in their basement. While they may be using more effectively than past presidents, they are not exactly in uncharted waters here..

Clinton's inaugural speech (1993)

From this joyful mountaintop of celebration, we hear a call to service in the valley. We have heard the trumpets. We have changed the guard. And now, each in our own way, and with God's help, we must answer the call. Thank you and God bless you all.

Reagan's inaugural speech (1981)

I am told that tens of thousands of prayer meetings are being held on this day, and for that I am deeply grateful. We are a nation under God, and I believe God intended for us to be free. It would be fitting and good, I think, if on each Inauguration Day in future years it should be declared a day of prayer.

LB Johnson's inaugural speech (1965)

Under this covenant of justice, liberty, and union we have become a nation -- prosperous, great, and mighty. And we have kept our freedom. But we have no promise from God that our greatness will endure. We have been allowed by Him to seek greatness with the sweat of our hands and the strength of our spirit.

LB Johnson's State of the Union speech (1965)

We were never meant to be an oasis of liberty and abundance in a worldwide desert of disappointed dreams. Our Nation was created to help strike away the chains of ignorance and misery and tyranny wherever they keep man less than God means him to be.

Kennedy's inaugural speech (1961)

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.

Eisenhower's farewell speech (1961)

You and I-my fellow citizens-need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under God, will reach the goal of peace with justice. May we be ever unswerving in devotion to principle, confident but humble with power, diligent in pursuit of the Nation's great goals.

But leave it to Bush to break from tradition and go so far as to state that we *are* on a mission from God.

Others use the mindset that we hope to be on God's side or we should show our faith in God through our works. Bush takes it a leap further and says God is telling us to spread freedom.

*shrug* Six in one hand, half-dozen in another. That's how I see it.

Anyway, Bush has enough problems/faults that I can let this one slide as a non-issue. :p

But he just said:

"We will never force our own version of democracy on those who want it."

Bush also said in his speech today:

?Self-governing starts with governing of self.?

Time to fire him *and* his speechwriter

He heard prime numbers and then figured out the primer for the alien language. Unfortunately, he mistook the word 'dipsh!t' for 'dipstick' and invaded Iraq.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here till Tuesday.
