2-11-2004 Bush Pushes Effort to Stop Spread of WMDs

WASHINGTON - Arguing that international efforts to combat nuclear proliferation have been neither broad nor effective enough, President Bush is calling for tougher global action against dangerous regimes and terrorist networks that seek those and other deadly weapons.

Bush was unveiling his new push for greater international resolve against the spread of weapons of mass destruction in a speech Wednesday at the National Defense University

In a proposal likely to anger nations such as North Korea (news - web sites) and Iran, Bush was to call for preventing countries from acquiring nuclear enrichment and reprocessing technology under the guise of building civilian power facilities

Edit: Hysterical, he trotted out Condi Rice to push this agenda today.

as we move closer and closer to large scale nuclear power as well as technology advances it becomes easier and easier for all countries to get 'bad toys' into there hands. The average science graduate has a complete understanding of how much of these devices are built...they only lack funding and materials. These countries have agents contacting some new 'grads' for sort of lucritive job offers.

I was approached by a drug dealer on campus once outside the organic chem labs (I had access to them and was there alone)...he had 'recipes' he would pay me to make. Now it's possible he was just an undercover cop...but it's possible he wasn't. I had friends I used to club with that knew I could make them stuff as well and offered to pay or trade 'services' for it. This is all small scale stuff, when you look at large scale and the monies that back it....it gets scary.

The question is can we really take it upon ourselves to tell another nation how they are to live and accept they will accept that? In that, are we anymore right because we have the exact same items we are forbidding another nation from acquiring?

Is it the right thing for all of mankind or just the right thing for us?

As much as this goes against my grain :(

Should we be acting as the world's policeman with regards to a soveriegn country's right to technology.

Yes there will be a pain/price if they mis-handle it, but do we have the right to pre-empt it?

As long as they stay within their borders, we should leave them alone.
Assistance/knowledge could be provided to attempt to ensure that the use of the technology is along our principles.

Once the technology is used/threatened/exported in a hostile intent (even internally), then it becomes a different situation.

If it was up to you dmcowen674 we'd sit on our hands yelling conspiracy conspiracy right up till we get attacked again. If you think Iran and Syria don't feel a little uneasy with the largest superpower the planet has ever seen army on their doorstep think again. Hopefully these states that turn a blind eye or promote terror will think twice before letting the next OBL pop up in their backyard bring down the might of a president with the resolve to lead us to a safer tomorrow.

Bottomline don't sit on our hands and let history judge us as impotent. The UN already has that covered.

The question is can we really take it upon ourselves to tell another nation how they are to live and accept they will accept that?
Saddam didn't but we only did the dirty work the UN passed resolution after resolution to try and tell them not just us.

I see Bush continuing with his "Mission From God" routine, and telling the world that
only the USA knows enough to do anything right, and he is the new worlds chosen leader.

All you other countries just better do what we say and fall in line with what we want
or we'll just have to whip your ass, since we are the only ones who really matter anyway.

Hey Bubba - the issue was the UN resolution by the UN.
The US stepped 'out-of-bounds' to force a resolution that
WAS NOT the US's role to enforce.

Iraq had complied, the UN Inspectors verified that, intelligence certified it,
but the Administration didn't like the evidencee presented, so they
'Re-Worded' it to fit their pe-determined agenda.

Can you understand the concept that the Government lied ?
How about 'Embelished Evidence' to present a false viewpoint ?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway - how can you mention 'Battlestar Galactica'
even on the same thread as 'StarTrek' ?
Blastphemy !

(Spok says it's illogical)

It would have made more sense not to cut funding to things like the Nunn-Luger bill(has he restarted fully funding this one yet?) considering groups will more than likely just buy a warhead instead of try to make one. I do remember hearing that at least one 1 kiloton warhead was "stolen" from a base.
