People always want to pay less taxes, live with the benefits of a first world country AND want to reduce the deficits. ROFL, yeah and I want unicorns and rainbows too
The reason the chart looks like that is mainly liberal policies as well as demographics. In fact the progressive tax system alone is the main reason there is such a disparity between red and blue states.

1. The progressive tax system means that states with higher cost of living and thus higher pay rates also provide more income tax to the government.

2. Progressive created and favored welfare programs such as Medicaid and school lunch programs etc also favor states with lower average incomes by providing them with more handouts.

3. The movement of retirees from high cost of living northern states to lower cost of living southern states means that more money goes to those states in the form of Social Security and Medicare.

4. Red states traditionally provide a larger portion of our military services than blue states and thus more money is spent in red states on military retirement benefits as well as the cost of caring for vets.

Federal Tax Revenue by state per capita.

The 10 states that pay the least per person
West Virginia
Mississippi
New Mexico
South Carolina
Montana
Maine
Alabama
Kentucky
Arizona
Utah

Notice that everyone of these states is on the list for receiving more than they pay.

Yet with all of these government handouts they still vote republican and shake their fists at welfare and unemployment recipients.

Re-read my post.

It is less about government handouts than it is about paying less in taxes in the first place and seniors receiving their SS and Medicare benefits.

There's more truth in that than you know. Lovely red states like Mississippi would sink into the delta ooze w/o federal money. I don't begrudge 'em the money, at all, even if it apparently won't alleviate the self imposed backwardness they seem to enjoy.

The rest is your usual hogwash and platitudes. Lots of people retiring to Alaska and the Dakotas, huh? Obviously, nobody to Florida, California or Nevada, right?

If you can't figure out why New Jersey, California, New York, Illinois and others are having fiscal problems, you haven't realized that the good ole' boys down south are suckin' 'em dry, then dissin' 'em for their generosity.

The problems in those states have nothing to do with federal tax money and everything to do with local and state politics.

Nice blend of truth and fiction you're workin' today, PJ.

Their problems would be a helluva lot worse w/o federal monies, bet on that. We don't have to go to central america to find banana republics- we have a few of our own, south of the Mason-Dixon line.

If I weren't a soft headed liberal, I'd offer that we give 'em what they say they want, see how they like it.

Stolen! I always love this mantra. Please do not use roads to work, and go ahead and pay for your public education and please start saving now because you'll have to pay for your kids education too. Also keep your money in a mattress because you can't trust to put it into a bank as they are no longer insured and could go bankrupt and all your money would be gone. Since your keeping it at home, please also hire private bodyguards because there will be people who are going to rob you for said money as there are no more police and keep it in a fire proof safe as well since there is no fire department.

You may want to look at when income taxes started and how it was applied vs now.

There is more waste than application.

The Democrats have the White House
The Democrats control the House
The Republicans have a slim majority in the Senate

2 out of 3 means the Democrats are in control.

You obviously know nothing about Senate rules.

The state of Louisiana would like to extend both middle fingers your way.

Why don't you include all those offshore royalties that the Feds fuck us, with which we could build our own damned storm protection and rebuild our barrier islands, out of in those numbers and get back to me. Thanks.

Not to mention the itsy bitsy inconsequential stuff we provide to the country..... like 1/3 of its oil/nat gas/petrochemicals. A couple of valves get closed by those "good ole' boys down south" and the NE has a very cold winter and the rest of you have a real long walk to work.

I wouldn't call 59 a "slim" majority. That's almost veto proof 2/3rds.

It's not even filibuster proof 3/5th.
But not like anyone expects Republicans to take any responsibility for the results of their obstructionism anyways.

With the exception of number 4, which I'd like to see some actual data on to back up your statement, all you're doing is explaining the distribution of federal handouts. Which is interesting, but it doesn't really change the fundamental argument, which is that most states that benefit from federal money tend to be opposed to federal spending in general...and the other way around as well.

Or to put it another way, assuming this chart is accurate, if every dollar of federal taxes went back to the states it was collected from, quality of services would go up in blue states and down in red states. Which is not at all to say that one is "better" than the other, that's silly for some of the reasons you outlined. But it might be worth remembering just who benefits from federal spending next time the topic comes up for debate...

Gotta love Spidey's dogmatic lunacy. Stop Obama. From doing what? Bringing back taxation levels of the Reagan years? Affirming our commitment to nuclear arms control wrt the Russians, something Ronnie started 20 years ago? Instituting Romneycare, the republican healthcare plan from 1993? Following through on his predecessor's stupidity in Iraq and Afghanistan?

What is it you're so intent on stopping, Spidey?

All Republicans work for top 0.01% only half of Dems do so we got lucky. Next year won't be so lucky.

OTOH I just look forward to being able to write off strippers at 100% again. Simple needs for a simple man.

You aint too bright. Has perfect correlation to senator/population not red/blue.

Senators have lot of power in states like hawaii or AK with low pop their vote counts as much as Ca.

So now the democrats have to explain to their supporters why they did not vote for the extension of existing tax rates??? So if you are a "Rich Guy" do you send the democrats your donations or the guys that voted for extending the Bush Tax Policy?
