The Republicans voted AGAINST tax cuts for all Americans - for all the income of 98% of Americans.

The Democrats have exposed them as caring completely *for the richest* and not for the other 98%, for 'small government', for 'low taxes', for reducing the deficit.

The right will largely miss the point, blindly praising the Republicans 'sticking to their principles' or some other idiocy.

There is no win/win scenario for Dems

Republicans will get their way, they have full control.

No, they don't. If they did, we'd have more tax cuts for the rich - perhaps even more weighted in their favor. They might get it in 2012, though, if voters are idiots.

And they will just crank out more prapaganda to the low-information and Murdoch informed public that Democrats voted to raise taxes. They'll just leave out the details like it will only affect less than 2% of the population but hey those are silly details when you can demogue about raising taxes.

Use more two word sound bites. Like "raising taxes" on "job creators".

Those tax breaks have been great at creating jobs for the last ten years haven't they.

Anybody want to buy a bridge?

The Democrats have the White House
The Democrats control the House
The Republicans have a slim majority in the Senate

2 out of 3 means the Democrats are in control.

This should have happened before the election.

Pubbies are now raving about austerity, cutting programs, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Maybe now the fatcats will get a taste of it along with the rest of us.

I'll pay higher taxes- I can afford it. How about the usual right wing chumps who are up to their eyeballs in payments, who have every dime allocated from here to eternity?

It won't really mean squat to their heroes, however- a little extra in taxes for astronomical incomes doesn't mean the kids won't be going to Harvard... or that the yacht will have to go, either...

Vote Republican- they'll drive you home, and how.

Did you know Democrats VOTED FOR VIAGRA FOR SEX OFFENDERS???

I've posted this clip once before from Thursday's Rachel Maddow show, but it's great for some examples of how this works.

It probably deserves its own thread, but it's worth watching:

The Dems will give in.

Would be a perfect opportunity to see Shira's scenario come to fruition:

< Presidential News Conference >

..."I have in my hands TWO Tax plans. The First offers to match and continue the old tax rates for those who make less than $200,000. The Second is aimed at those who make more... I had these both to the House and to the Senate for their consideration..."

Brilliant idea on Shira's part.

Ok, I've posted this before, but I'll post it for those of you who don't understand how this works in the real world.

99% of people are not political junkies. They don't care about the nuances and technicalities any more than regular people care about the latest linux kernel intricacies. What they will see is that come January they get their paychecks and their taxes are jacked up. They will be angry, and they'll want to blame someone. They'll blame whoever is perceived to be "in power", which generally means the president.

The republicans will spin it like this: "see, those dems raised your taxes like they always do! Remember Obama saying your taxes not going up? Well here's the proof, Obama and the dems are just out to tax and spend as usual!".

The democrats will try to spin it like this: "the republicans raised taxes on everyone because they didn't want to raise taxes on the rich!".

Nobody has a crystal ball, but I'd guess the republican spin is going to be much easier to sell, especially in a crappy economy and with the democrat history of always taxing and spending. Heck, even at this point before taxes have gone up the majority of people believe Obama has raised their taxes.

98% =/= 100%

Learn to read (it'd be nice if you answered the question I put for you in another thread first).

This is a tax cut for 100% of taxpayers. Even the richest American gets a tax cut on the first $250K of his income.

It's a tax cut on the rate of 100% of their income for about 98% of Americans, whose income is under that amount.

Fixed that for you!

True - It's not January yet. :)

Which, of course, makes DMCowen's post that the Republicans have full control all the more asinine. ():)

My guess is that the first order of business come January is a retroactive tax cut for everyone. then the republican majority in the house can take credit, and Obama gets forced to sign it otherwise being labeled as a tax raiser.

lol.. the senate repubs in jan will have the same problem as the senate dems now.

they need 60 votes. the dems have 59 votes now and still have problems getting bills passed.

you think the repubs in jan w/a slimmer majority will do BETTER?
