Anyone up for a strike on Canada?? :D I'm sure that two F-22's could wipe out all their defenses:p

can anyone in the military please tell us whether these are actually needed? I'm all for keeping our stuff up to date but I'm just curious if these are needed or not.

Guess who's going to pay for these new toys. This budget doesn't even include the invasion and occupation of Iraq. I don't think we can afford George Bush's plan in this economy, not that I don't like the Raptors or the JSF.

B/C our F-15's are 20 years old and it is getting costly to upgrade/repair them. The F-22 is the F-15's direct replacement and the JSF is replacing the F/A 18, F-16, A-10, and AV8

superhornets, yes, not only is it more modern (and much larger than the current hornet) but the plane's versatility will allow the navy to (once the JSF is in place) have only 2 fighter/attack planes in the inventory, which will make maintenence and other requirements cost quite a bit less (don't have to stock parts for lots of different planes, parts are in stock so you don't have to start canabalizing, etc). it'll save money in the long run. F22/jsf combo should be able to do similar things for the air force.

these will be necessary as long as the french and the russians insist on selling their latest techonology to whoever wants it.

I think it would only take one F-22 to take out Their Tank

And I agree with the others, Do we really need 23 173Million dollar planes. It seems the planes we have now are doing the job, and these new ones have not been proven and yet wek still pay close to 200Mill. a plane?

Can someone say election year and Bush wants the senate so he can push whatever he wants on America.

AFAIK, the Super Hornet is taking over some of the duties of the F-14 and the naval variant of the JSF with SVTOL capabilities is taking the place of the "regular" F/A 18. The JSF with full VTOL capacity is replacing the AV8 Harrier.

I have heard from my father that these are a total waste of money. He works for PA&E, the Pentagon's weapons analysis division. In earlier years, (haven't talked to him about it lately) he said that in their then-current state, they were useless. Funneling money into them was something his department did not recommend. Now that Rumsfeld is in office, most of PA&E's advice is ignored, however.

There's a good story, documented in the Washington Post, about how Rumsfeld wanted carrier estimates for changing theaters of war. He gave the dept. 2 weeks to come up with an answer, which is a ridiculously short amount of time to do sufficient research. When PA&E gave the best answer it could, Rumsfeld had the head of the dept. removed, basically. Why? Because PA&E's answer wasn't what he wanted to hear. Makes me hate Rumsfeld even more.

Our F-15 was the top dog TWENTY years ago. There are bigger and badder planes on the horizon now that could clean the F-15's clock. The military is just getting rid of the dead flesh.

The regular F/A 18 and the Super Hornet are two different planes.

The F/A 18 was entered into service in the early 80's. The Super Hornet is a new plane that looks like the F/A 18 but is about 10 - 15% larger all around and uses a stronger airframe and more advanced avionics.

navy fact file the EF basically takes everything good about the first hornet and improves on it, giving us the super hornet.

while technically correct, the EF variants are such a huge upgrade that you can pretty much consider it a separate plane.

The media and even the Air Force said that the A-10 was a waste of money. Then comes the air war against the Iraqi's and they desimated(sp) their armor.

Well since it passed the senate 93-1 it was hardly a partisan decision.
