Bush signs ?do-not-call? list bill- expected to be in operation this summer!

IIRC it will be web sign-up.

You can bet your ass my name will be on it.

The question is, will the liberals find a way to bitch about this?

😀

People (if you want to call telemarketers and their lobbyists that) are already complaining about this "restricting their free speech"

Legal challenges to follow. Personally, I dont see a difference between this and putting a "no solictitors" sticker on your door

You are allowed free speech in public. The instant you call you are invading my home and my privacy. How would someone like it if I came into their home about 3 times a night and tried to get you to buy a subscription to whatever?

Texas already has one of these, thanks to GW. It works well too. Now that I have moved and have a new number, the solitors are back. Time to get back on the list.

"Charities, surveys and calls on behalf of politicians would be exempt."

I for one don't want any politicians calling me. Charities, maybe. Surveys no (unless you pay me big bucks)

"The Direct Marketing Association is an industry group that represents telemarketers
and direct mailers. It maintains lists of consumers who don't want sales calls, mail
or e-mails. Telemarketers who are members of the DMA and who subscribe to this
list are supposed to refrain from calling anyone on the list. It won't stop all
telemarketing calls to your home though.
To put your name on the Telephone Preference Service, mail a request with your name
and phone numbers to:
Telephone Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014

To remove your name from direct mailing lists, mail your name, variations of your name,
other names of household members and your address to:
Mail Preference Service
Direct Marketing Association
P. O. Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014
? You can also register online to receive fewer unwanted e-mails. "

We've had it in Tennessee for a couple of years now, and its everything you heard about it. Haven't had a telemarketing call in 2 years. Some weasel companies like discover card can still call at bad hours because I have a discover card( one of the loopholes), but even those are rare and are dealt with quickly.

Telemarketers...

I like talking to them. It's fun.

They find out quickly that I will A) not hang up first, and B) not buy their product. In some cases, they have to have their managers hang up the phone for them.

NEVER give money to charities when its solicited over the phone. About 75% of that money goes the the telemarketer! Better to just send a check right to the charity.

It's already made a dramatic difference for me in MN, where the list went into effect Feb 1. I've started giving people my home phone number again, instead of my cell phone number, because I can comfortably turn the ringer back on.
