Well, I have never really ventured in to P&N before, but this set me off. According to this article, Bush says:

"I hear the voices, and I read the front page and I know the speculation," the president said. "But I'm the decider, and I decide what's best. And what's best is for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the secretary of defense."

Am I the only person that thinks that is one fvcked up thing for a president to say? The president shouldn't be deciding what's best, the people are (in a democracy).

Granted, Bush is a horrible president, but wouldn't you think his speech writers wouldn't let him say that? I think for Bush to say that he, and only he, decides what is best for our country is just wrong. We have a democratic-republic for a reason. Hell, the House and Senate could make better decisions than the executive branch at this point.

He hears the voices allrighty.

But seriously, think of Bush as your dad when you were about 10 years old. That analogy works wonders to explain some of the crap that comes out of his mouth.

You should have heard him in person. He's shown on CNN now and then. But that's Bush. He's not running for re-election, so what does he care? Of course, there's a reason why the rest of his party are trying to move away from him.

BTW, he was elected to office. You don't have a democratic say in what happens... you have a democratic say in who represents you. It's why it's called a representative democracy rather than a townhall democracy (where you could go and vote on everything).

The Country elected Bush twice so unfortunately we have no one to complain about the situation other than ourselves and fellow pew mates.

Sure we have a say in what happens, by all frames of reference. Let enough people get riled up and things change, PDQ. A salient point, though not many seem to care anymore: This isn't a democracy. Our form of government was designed to severely limit the control that both the "majority" and all levels of government could exert on our individual lives. The same holds true in the arena of foreign relations. The framers were openly contemptuous of the idea that a fickle, easily manufactured majority would be able to maintain any principles whatsoever.

As it is, government has become a prize that once won is often used to bludgeon\silence enemies and as a vehicle for indulgence.

Things change because the representatives does the changing... and they do it because they want to keep office. But the people themselves rarely get a direct say in it. You don't go to the ballots, aside from referendums, and actually vote on the issues. Look at Bush, even if the majority of people want Rumsfeld gone, Bush doesn't have to... and probably won't, he has no incentive to. He's not running for re-election.

I don't think it matter who actually pushes the buttons to get things done. That's like saying that a cab driver picks the destination by virtue of the fact that he's driving, and we both know it doesn't work that way. Again, if the American people want something, and SAY so loudly enough, they get it. Bush is a "special" case, but even he listens to polling and would respond to popular opinion if pressed hard enough. No, he isn't running for election, but his party is. This fact limits what he can get away with to a high degree in that he needs support and cover to get what he wants done.

Yeah, the capital district is a little different from the Island, but its not too bad.

RPI has a lot of people from Long Island, and Mass, so it's not that horrible, as if say, I was in Buffalo, or Syracuse.

I personally love the NYC area and hope to live on Long Island, Westchester, or north Jersey when I graduate. I wanna have a job close to, or in Manhattan.

Right now I am on co-op in Raleigh, NC, and it truly sucks. While everything is nice and new, it's still Raleigh, and its nothing like NYC.

What part of NY are you originally from?

Well, if the people have a say in it... then why is it that if the majority of americans don't want to be in Iraq, why you're still iraq? If the majority of americans (last poll i saw was like 70%) wants Rumsfeld replaced, then why isn't he? If the people really had a say, like in a referendum, 70% is more than enough to force a change.

We have a democracy in who we elect. We do NOT have a democracy in the actual decisions. Bush is right on this... HE'S the decider, not the people.

Poorly said? No doubt.

But it is absolutely true. Whatever everybody says, he still decides who will be/remain secretary of defense.

Well, maybe him and Cheney...

Spent all of my youth on Great South Bay, Fire Island, Oceanside, Jones Beach and Coney Island.

I'm sure those days are over for kids because of high gas prices. It was easy and inexpensive to hit the pumps from beach to beach back then even for me as a kid on Newspaper route money.

Da Bronx.
But if you were at RPI you lived in Albany (or Renselear). I lived in Albany for 7 years. Went to SUNY.
