Bush orders oil price gouging probe..

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/25/bush.energy/index.html
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pressured by looming midterm elections, sinking poll numbers and angry consumers, President Bush is expected to outline a four-point plan on Tuesday aimed at fighting rising gasoline prices.

The speech, set for 10:05 a.m. ET in Washington, comes after Bush ordered a federal investigation into possible cheating or illegal manipulation in the gasoline markets, said White House press secretary Scott McClellan.

"I think you'll hear the president say very clearly that he will not tolerate price gouging," McClellan said.

On the eve of the nation's busiest driving season, American consumers are paying a national average of $2.91 per gallon for regular self-serve, according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gasoline stations this month. (Watch why some pumps shut down as prices go up -- 2:51)

"The president will talk about why gas prices are high," McClellan said. "He will talk about how global demand for energy is really rising faster than the global supply, because of countries like China and India, and he'll talk about how gasoline demand is only projected to increase this summer, and experts are projecting that gas prices will remain high through the summer."

U.S. oil companies reported record profits in 2005, led by Exxon Mobil, which said it made $36.1 billion -- the biggest annual profit on record for a U.S. company.

"The president is going to make very clear .. that energy companies should reinvest those profits that they're making back into new technologies and alternative sources of energy," he said.

Bush's presidential approval ratings have sunk to a personal low, with only 32 percent of respondents to a new CNN poll saying they approve of the way he is handling his job. (Full story)

McClellan detailed Bush's four-point plan:

# To make sure that consumers and taxpayers are treated fairly

# To promote greater fuel efficiency

# To boost U.S. gasoline supply

# To invest aggressively in gasoline alternatives.

Bush has asked the departments of Energy and Justice to begin the inquiries into possible gouging.

Members of the GOP-controlled Congress are concerned that rising gasoline prices could threaten their success in the November elections.

In a letter released on Monday, House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Illinois, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee, urged Bush to order a federal probe into possible gasoline price gouging or market speculation.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, dismissed Hastert's and Frist's letter as "empty rhetoric." (Full story)

McClellan said the Bush administration shares "a commitment with congressional leaders to make sure that we're acting to ensure that there is no price gouging."

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and the Federal Trade Commission sent a letter Tuesday to all 50 state attorneys general, McClellan said, who have primary authority over price gouging issues. The letter will ask them to monitor the issue, he said, and to offer federal help.

If he wants to get serious about gas prices he'd order to cut the dozens of different blends used during the summer down to one or two and possibly a cut in the taxes at the pump.

Instead of wating time with a probe he should force congress off their ass and make the car manufactuers push hybird and flex fuel cars. He should aslo be drilling in ANWR.

You know had we started drilling in ANWR in 20001 WE'D HAVE FREAKING OIL ALREADY!

I bet the price will actually go down.

I wouldn't be surprised since the price of a barrel of crude oil hit a high yesterday and fell off.

what'd it go down to?

Went from $75.35 to $73.10. Not alot but at least it isn't going up more.

Well here is the bottom line, Bush could care less he is in his last term... however the congressmen who are up for re-election are now begining to get edgy and worried about their own damned seats! So to me, they get whatever is coming to them this upcoming election year. As far as I am concerned the president and congress have been protecting to many special interestes including big business at the expense of the little people for far too long. Bush isn't going to do anything.... he will just blow smoke with his own rhetoric in the face of the public. I voted for Bush a long time ago, and sooooo regret it now.

The big oil companies had Bush in their pockets and funded his campaign for president a long time ago. He plays golf with these oil tycoons, he did long before he was president. What makes you think he would do anything that would hurt them during their time of big profit right now?

you realize that if they started drilling in 2001...that we wouldn't have oil till about 2009 by best estimates...and there'd be roughly enough oil...for one summer.

And it would all be sold to Korea and Japan.

Hybrids are actually more energy intensive than a good deisel car
Oil supply really isn't the problem its refining capacity so you could have all the Oil from Anwar today it wouldn't make any difference to the price at the pump.

Wasn't that if ANWR was the only source of oil we used though?

Still, ANWR, drilling off the Florida coast, developing the processing of oil shale...all are viable ways of bringing the price of oil down in the long-term. Throw in alternatives and getting rid of the dozens of different blends that create artificial shortages.

Demonizing oil companies because they are making a profit is not a viable way of bringing down the price of oil. Especially when government makes far more profit off the sale of a gallon of gasoline than the oil companies do.

It's a world market. The futures market is what determines the price of a barrel of crude oil not the oil companies. The more supply there is on the open market the lower the price will be.

I agree with the blends that you mentioned, it's crazy they have so many. Isn't it like 40+ blends in all. Why can't they just have a winter and summer blend. I'd even settle for a urban and rural blend too.

wow, first insigtful post about oil on this side of P&N
The general consensus seems to be that greedy oil companies are stealing from poor americans and killing baby bunnies...
