new "plan" seeks 25% drop in drug use over 5 years.

<edit> And how exactly will this work? Jailing more peaceful potheads? How will that fit with Bush's budget that reduces state money for prisons?

I'm afraid this thread might escalate into something bad. :(

If they really wanted to win the war on drugs, they should legalize them. :D

Don't you get it? Your local grower wants to harm America. Yes, that's the ticket. ;)

Ok, he did pretty well with the whole Afghanistan thing, I'll give him that, but otherwise, I don't think GWB knows what he's doing.
He will never reduce drug usage. He'll only put more people in jail.

ooh, now he's tying the drug war into "faith based initiatives".

"we love you so much we're gonna convince you not to use drugs in the future". "We must not be afraid of faith".

Said something about sending armies of "faith workers" out to stop drug users.

Damn, those faith workers came to my college dorm room once a year. They weren't trying to stop me from using drugs though... they singled me out for saving. :Q

10% teen reduction next 2 years
25% reduction nationally in next 5 years...

Okay, there's his goals. Now if you guys don't like what he's doing, how would *you* combat the drug problem?

A good start would be actually making entertainment stars and professional athletes do hard time. None of this have your agent weasle you out of a jail time crap. You do the crime, you do the time. Once you start throwing some big name celebrities in the slammer, the glamor and allure of it starts to drop.

Of course, kids will be kids, and crackheads will be crackheads, but making those in the media actually pay for their crimes will ultimately help decrease the mysticism and draw of drugs in those that are more recreational users than habitual.

Well first you need to define the "drug problem". What drugs? Why is it a problem? What problems are they causing specifically that he seeks to reduce? I know that this plan was based on a gov't report but I obviously dont have access to it.

If you seek to reduce use among existing hard core users, spending 1.6 billion over 5 years on treatment isnt gonna cut it. Thats only an increase of $100 million spread over those 5 years. (from what we currently spend.) Im all for treatment for those who want it, but face it, its incredibly expensive. $300 million/year cannot fund that, and I certainly dont think that can reduce the use by 25%.

I dont want this thread degenerating into a legalization debate, but we need to follow the lead of NM and its governer and attempt to decriminalize/legalize marijuana use.

I'm waiting for Bush to say "these drug cartel are a clear and present danger to the national securty of the United States". Then we can send some SpecOps forces to kick somer serious tail.
