2-13-2004 CBS Pulls Medicare Ad Pending Review

WASHINGTON - CBS has stopped running the Bush administration's publicly funded ad for the new Medicare prescription drug law, pending a review of its content by congressional investigators.

The 30-second ad, titled "Same Medicare. More Benefits," has prompted strong criticism from Democratic lawmakers and a range of interest groups who say it is a barely disguised commercial for President Bush's re-election campaign.

HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson said Thursday he will withdraw the ad only if GAO determines it's political.

But Thompson vigorously defended the content of the commercial and said the law authorizes him to mount an extensive campaign to educate recipients about significant changes to Medicare.

HHS is spending $9.5 million to air the ad on network and cable television through March.

A media firm with ties to Bush's re-election effort, National Media Inc. of Alexandria, Va., also is working on the Medicare campaign.

In a survey of television viewers, when quizzed on facts regarding the war in Iraq, CBS viewers held a number of mis-conceptions (like Saddam had links to Al Qaeda) second only to Fox. From most mis-conceptions to least was something like Fox - CBS - NBC - CNN - PBS. Draw your own conclusions.

and you would call that study objective?? look at your terminology alone and tell me that "survey" wasn't biased....please, post a link.

global policy
A new study based on a series of seven nationwide polls conducted from January through September of this year reveals that before and after the Iraq war, a majority of Americans have had significant misperceptions and these are highly related to support for the war with Iraq.

The polling, conducted by the Program on International Policy (PIPA) at the University of Maryland and Knowledge Networks, also reveals that the frequency of these misperceptions varies significantly according to individuals' primary source of news. Those who primarily watch Fox News are significantly more likely to have misperceptions, while those who primarily listen to NPR or watch PBS are significantly less likely.

Hey i primarily watch PBS and listen to Both NPR
and I will tell you reguardless of Rumored bias, PBS and NPR both tackle all the issues head on. Frontline runs some excellent indepth programs, That they gave both sides of the fence every oppertunity to sell and relay that side of the story.

No other "Real" news outlet balances the subject and tries to be 100% accurate in their reporting than PBS, NPR and the occasional New yorker article.

I find it interseting that those who complain of a liberal bias uses Foxnews, Rush, hannity and Ann coulter as "Objective" sources.

And I listen to these guys to get every angle. Hannity is a patriotic propagator, Rush is a master of the Half truths ( But he is excellent at mixing his facts with opionion and pssing the whole package off as a fact) Foxnews .............. and ann coulter has a few screws loose.

SO my primary News outlets are PBS,NPR, Rush, Hannity radio Show, Occasional Savage radio show, 60 minutes, and once in a while i randomly pick a 6:30 news cast from one of the big three.

I mix it up and was well informed about the Iraq situation.

Indeed! Have you fallen asleep in your cave again Bozack?

That is the whole advantage of being incumbent, you get to say anything you want and it gets into the media no need to spend money on ads at all.In fact Id feel much better about the whole thing if Bush took his 100+ million smackaroonies and put them into funding his Iraq conquest than putting more commercials on TV.
